Bone can be stabilized and will benefit from it. Bone moves, shrinks, warps just like ivory. Just not as bad. Keep it dry. Don't dunk in water to cool. Don't get it hot when grinding. It should not get hotter than you can touch your lips to it. A lot like giving it a big kiss. When...

yes. It's very dense compared to the others. The finish is also smoother.

Giraffe bone is great to work with. Better than ivory or bovine bone. Cutting scales that aren't a wobbly mess is tough tho.

What's going on in your shop?

I have managed to engrave the front side of my recent auto knife build. Lettering is harder than scroll engraving. It is much more demanding and you can't hide any mistakes. I practiced this one for 15 hours before I worked up the nerve to cut it on the knife. I use an Ipad and Procreate app...

What's going on in your shop?

This is a Proxon Pantograph. They run around $230 on Amazon. The rotary tool is another $110 so for $340 you get a mini pantograph. We have been testing one here and the results are encouraging. These do have to be modified a bit. We are using 4 to 1 reduction from pattern to work piece. The...

What's going on in your shop?

mixed bag post today. I am working on finishing the auto knife. It was stupidly heavy. I used a 3/8" end mill and hollowed out the handles. Huge improvement. I needed to countersink the pivot head I plan on using and didn't have a counterbore to fit. The pivot hole is already there so it...

it is a worthwhile process to have in your tool set. I use a cork belt with compound on most every knife anymore. It’s fast and forgiving.

    SS wrapping puffy

I put paper in to get that puffy envelope. My experience has been that when the foil shrinks up tight all the way, it either sticks or warps the blade or both especially on thinner stock folder blades. The cleaner the blade is from oil, junk etc helps. Some guys use dykum layout fluid on their...

    Controls on H/T ovens

That exact one is the best selling oven in the knife business hands down for several reasons. Good choice.

    Controls on H/T ovens

probably best to avoid the neutral atmosphere. It is way more expensive than foil. There are applications it used for but not knife making generally.

What's going on in your shop?

I managed to stay focused and get a bit done on the auto knife build. The button has a 7 degree ramp on the inside and you use a 7 degree end mill to match that on the blade. I visited with Phil Booth last week. He is the godfather of auto's. Super nice guy and very helpful. We talked about...

it works. the open position is a touch loose when yesterday it was solid. Weird. The closed position is there but it releases way too easy. I’ll have to do some file work on both but I’m happy to have gotten this far without a major issue.

What's going on in your shop?

Making some progress on the auto knife. This button has a little lip on it so I needed to counter bore the hole for it. It was really a quick and dirty way. I enlarged the hole with a 3/8" drill and then used a 3/8" end mill to take it further and give me a flat bottom for the lip. This holds...
