    Dirk WIP w/ 1-piece Bolster/Frame

This is a bit different profile than what I've been making lately... more dirk, less Bowie/fighter. I wanted to try something new, so will be trying a 1-piece bolster/frame. I'm guessing it might be entertaining to watch me struggle through that milling operation. PHOTO 1 First...

Just Finished - Smallwood Kwaikens in 1095

So I'm calling these "Smallwood Kwaikens", because there's a small piece of wood inset in each handle. It's not an especially creative name, I suppose... but I think it works. Some Stats: Length: 5-31/32" (so basically 6") Blade: 2-13/16" (Tip to choil), 0.153" thick in front of the wrap...

What's going on in your shop?

Yep... the core strands were removed, and the wraps were painted with West Systems epoxy for resiliency. Erin

What's going on in your shop?

Hey John... thanks for the question. The Japanese term for handle wrapping is tsukamaki. A traditional handle would be built around a wood (Honoki) core covered in ray skin, and wrapped with silk cord (ito). These knives are very non-traditional. Each has a small accent piece of wood inset...

What's going on in your shop?

After spending some time tooling up for it, I made my first attempts at Kydex last weekend. Here are some sheaths in various stages of completion... carbon fiber Kydex in front, black in back. Erin

One-Image WIP -- The Kydex Rivet Press

Good points Anthony. There are also some semi-important items that I failed to mention above. To remove the ram, I loosened the four bolts on the face of the ram-guide... but did not remove them. When loose enough, there's enough room for the ram to disengage from the drive teeth and slide...

One-Image WIP -- The Kydex Rivet Press

I'm not sure whether this is expansive -- or detailed -- enough to be considered a really-real WIP... but this is what I did today after receiving my rivet dies in the mail from Tracy. CHEAP HARBOR FREIGHT ARBOR PRESS -----> KYDEX RIVET PRESS And THAT's what's up with that. Elapsed time ~30...

Western Tanto in W2 and Karelian Birch

The padded surfaces are handy for when I accidentally drop an un-tempered blade.

What's going on in your shop?

A few things from my shop recently. First... this knife has been sitting in a drawer waiting for pants for the better part of a year. It take about that long for me to build up the emotional energy to start leather work. Next, I've been working a small batch of EDC utilities...

Western Tanto in W2 and Karelian Birch

Thanks Adam... I appreciate the feedback. The sheath thing is something I've done a few times in the past, and it really seems to pull the theme together on these Japanese-inspired knives. Thanks again. Erin

some knives fresh off the bench

Very cool friction folders, brother. I really like the first one and the two that are displayed half-open (like sickles). Nice work. Erin

Western Tanto in W2 and Karelian Birch

I'm calling this one a Western Tanto... the adjective "Western" giving me license to mangle and misuse a myriad of traditional Japanese terms. ;) Please feel free to let me know what you think. Erin

Western Tanto in W2 and Karelian Birch

It's been a crazy year... and this knife was a LONG time in the making. I'm calling this one a Western Tanto... the adjective "Western" giving me license to mangle and misuse a myriad of traditional Japanese terms. ;) Some Stats: Length: 13-7/8" Blade: 8-1/16" (Tip to choil), 0.093" thick at...

    WIPstagram - American Tanto progress

Well, I finished the sheath this afternoon. This is my first stab at a final photo. I'll probably start posting images all over in a few days... but I figure that anyone who hung in there through this WIP earned the right to get a sneak peak. I'll likely try a few different shots over the...

Which epoxy do you use, and why?

I use two epoxies in my shop… and Ed already mentioned both of them: Acraglas and West Systems.
