    Cherry wood

Cherry is one of my favorite woods for general wood working. It cuts and machines wonderfully! I've got a bunch of cherry lumber, but so far I've never tried it on knife. One thing I've done with woodworking cherry is to put the finished piece in bright sunlight for a couple weeks. It oxidizes...

Might see a familiar face on Season 2 of Historys Knife or Death.

I've been a fan of the show since it started, but last weeks show set me off! First, why do they keep having coal forges setup in bright daylight? Some kind of sick joke? I like all the judges, but I really want to see an episode where they are out there in the bright sun with a coal forge...

Knife Exchange (KITH) Updated. Please read

If I'm still on the list you'll have to remove me too. I've just been too busy and I don't want to submit a rush job. I promised a few people knives in time for Christmas gifts and that's all I've been doing. I've got 9 sheaths to make still! Maybe next year...

Add some texture to your forge work.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'll like it either, but I am working on a huge combat machete type thing that I thought might look cool with some texture. So, going to give it a shot, we'll see.

Add some texture to your forge work.

Back in my Marine Corps days, I'm sure I could've came up a good Navy/needle scaler joke on this one. Ha!

    Best router bit for Kydex?

Speed kills with router bits. I've had several ooops with the router, but now I only use regular end mills in my mill/drill and it works great. Gave up on the router bits.

Add some texture to your forge work.

Hey, guys, just tried out a new idea yesterday to add a little character or age to forgings. Worked great! Here's a quick vid showing how...

    First attempt at stainless steel

Gene, that's about how it is for me too. I've got 1" plates and use air for about a minute or so, then remove foil. I dunk my plates in the quench bucket between blades to keep them cooled off. AEBL has pretty much became my go-to for SS.

Well, I've so busy, I haven't started one yet. Don't count me out just yet, I might still make it.

    Opinions on kilns?...

I made my first few knives in a free, top loading, pottery kiln with a manual temp control. It works, but sucks too. You need some long tongs to reach down in there or else you'll smoke your gloves! I put a thermocouple in mine and read the temp with a fluke multimeter. I had to stay right there...

Might see a familiar face on Season 2 of Historys Knife or Death.

Last night was the best tv I've watched in a loooong time! Love the show, especially with somebody we know on there! Great job Justin, you guys were pretty much tied, could've went either way.

    vfd and motor ?

Baldor makes great motors, some of the best. I worked for them in an R&D lab for a few years and tested hundreds of motors and vfds. Even though my career took me elsewhere, I still use mainly Baldor motors.

    Advice on forging 416 SS.

Can't really find 416 ss in the dimensions I want for a reasonable price. So, I picked up this 1.5" bar pretty cheap online, guess I'll try forging what I want. Any of you guys have experience doing this? How hot do I work it? Does it air harden quickly while you're working it? Annealed...

    Bolsters & Guards

Actually, I'm making a guard right now out of historic RR spike steel. The section of decommissioned track where I found it dated back to the 1870's, but of course there's no real way to date the spike. I've got a previous customer that has a piece of small ore car rail found in a mine in...

Lets talk the Business of Knifemaking.

Back to page one where this started......I whole heatedly 2nd, 3rd, 4th,.... not taking orders! If you are newish and a part timer don't do that to yourself, you'll get bored and burned out. I started an order list when I first started selling and soon realized that it was going to take me a...

My latest and most involved to date...

Thanks, I agree. Since I was only allowed one photo entry, I had to try and get it all into one pic. Even then, I didn't really get to show the thumb jimping I did, which had a little extra detail.
