    Leather Sewing Machine

I've been seriously considering the Boss. From everything I've seen once you get it figured out and learn a few tricks they're pretty good.

    Warping 1095

I've used AEBL several times now and haven't notice it warp, that's weird. I've had 1095 blanks laser cut and they come back warped a little. I annealed them in a batch and hand straighten before grinding. Never noticed the warp come back.

Yeah, I'm still here! My latest...

AEBL blade, 303 SS bolsters, corby's, custom etch on backside, redwood burl. The wood is neat and was provided by the customer. It was cut in california over 100 years ago by his great grandfather! He brought me a piece and I stabilized it with Cactus Juice.

    Still here, life is busy!

I'm right with you Justin, two teenagers and never a spare minute for anything! I only made 8 knives last year and looking like only 3 or 4 this year.

    AEB=L bad Heat Treatment?

I do my own heat treat and I've never had an AEBL blade not harden fully. Something sounds off with the heat treater or you got some mis-labled steel.

    Electric motor enclosure?

I worked in an engineering lab for a few years at a motor manufacturer. We made a lot of dc motors, brushless dc motors, and servo motors. Almost all of them were TENV motors. A lot of them had thermostat contacts in them that would allow a control to stop the motor if it overheated. Some of...

    GeneK's KITH Bowie

Nice Gene, I've had a few knives that had a slight hamon, but I've tried polishing one out. I just got some 1075 in and I've heard it makes great hamons, think I'll try it again on my next blade.

    I wonder.......

I use this setup, might be a little hokey, but I've never felt like I was getting a speck of dust or fiber in me. The filters last a really long time for me too .

    Constructive criticism and thoughts please!

I would echo Chris' thoughts mostly. I would also add that as a beginner you might do yourself a favor and tone it back on size. That's a really big blade for #3. I would recommend getting really good at 7"-8" hunters and drop points before tackling the big ones. I'm no expert either, but even...

I'm seriously considering giving up knife making

I stop and start all the time. I've went for 6 months without making a knife and then made 10 at once. Like most of you guys, I'm beyond busy, keep way to many irons in the fire! Just step away for a little while, get caught up on other things, your skills don't perish that fast. Oh, and most...

    304 bolsters?

You can do 304, I have. It is a pain to drill. I got some pin stock from Enco I think, but they're gone now. This knife below has 304 bolsters.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

Ha! No, I made that before YouTube even existed, lol.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

I usually drill a few holes in my tangs too. Weight reduction and might help glue up. Since I didn't make this one, it just went back as it was. My cabinet is homemade, I'm sure you can make one for next to nothing.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

I found a couple things that could be better and the maker already knew about them mostly. He's interested in doing a production run once he makes a couple small changes. I really like it, very position-able.

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

Yeah, it is. It looks kind of weird I guess, but it works great if you have a beard. Of course there's a video for it, lol....

New scales on an old knife. Giraffe bone upgrade!

A vid I just finished, fixing a knife for a customer. Do any of you take on repairs too? I really don't like doing repairs on someone else's work, but I've done it a few times. I need to just say no! I usually have no idea what to charge for repairs, but anyway, here's how I did this one...

    Top three mistakes rookies make,,,

I think a big mistake I see online is overconfidence. You see guys trying to sell their 3rd or 4th knife with 80 grit grind lines and rough filework for $500. Half of them look like a movie prop from Mad Max. If you're new, don't be ashamed to to say so and be humble. A lot of those guys dont...

Which contact wheel, if you could only have one?

I think it's mainly the look you're after. If you want big broad hollow grinds that almost look like flat grinds, I'd say 10" or bigger. If you're building Loveless hunters, a 4" or 5" wheel will give that look. If you're making razors, maybe even smaller.
