    Electro etch makers mark w/emblem

I'd say if you're set on the helmet, that's fine. Take you name and put it in straight line under it where it now says custom knives, easier to read. Delete the "custom knives" from you mark, save that for a tshirt.

Have you ever tried a Loveless style knife? I've only recently delved into learning about some of the founders of the American knife industry. You put me on to Scagel a couple years ago, then I found Marble, Randal, Moran, etc. Right now the Loveless style has me intrigued. I'm considering...

    Handsanding improvements!

I do some belt finished knives, but more often than not, I do hand sanding. I like the hard backer for the initial sanding, since I'm not perfect off the grinder this allows to me make little corrections. Once I'm happy with the hand "shaping" or leveling I do use either a rubber or leather...

    Handsanding improvements!

Ok, our favorite subject, hand sanding, a necessary evil. I've noticed I always have a hard time not blurring the lines between the flats and bevel. I see guys with these razor sharp transitions and wonder how the heck they do it. I've been using a flat ground piece of blade stock and holding...

Zito KITH WIP- 9-2-18 update pics

A few weeks ago, I helped a young man make his first knife. He was kind of scared of the grinder and was very reluctant to hog any metal off. So, I dug out the filing jig and he thought that would be much easier. After 15 or 20 minutes of filing, he asked if he could try the grinder again. I got...

Oh, the joys of hand filing bevels..... I made a couple of knives with that same setup at first and quickly hid that thing in a dark, forgotten corner!

You can't decide on who gets what or draw names until the end. Last time there were a couple guys drop out, so you really won't know how many we end up with.

    Comparing Grinders. the 2x72 type

Unless you just have a bunch of money to spend, I say if you're a newer maker and you have the ability, definitely make your own. It's not that hard to do and when you're new you don't know what you don't know. Getting some hours in on your first grinder will tell you what you like and don't...

Wow! Have you tried the super glue trick?

I will, next time I video making a knife I'll include it for sure.

Wow! Have you tried the super glue trick?

Knifemaker style on bone/horn is a mess. The dust and the smell makes it a miserable material, but milling it made no noticeable dust in the air and no smell! I got 2 flat bone scales in a short time and much flatter and parallel than I could ever get on the grinder. If you have a mill or a belt...

Wow! Have you tried the super glue trick?

I heard about super glue work holding a while back, but hadn't tried until just now. Holy cow! This is a game changer! Basic idea is you put painters tape on the back of your part, and then put tape on the table. You then super glue the part down on the table, the glue stays between the painters...

Need some new scale fitment ideas....

I experimented a little with the shadow box style yesterday, seems like it would end up as a pretty thin handle to look right. Keyhole or similar ideas are on the face of the scales, I was looking for new ideas on the edge or spine. Right now I'm experimenting with a copper and bone stack idea.

    Used lathe or mill

The first mill I bought was a smaller JET knee mill, single phase, and it has a neck extension to get more depth. On little mills with a vise, you don't have much room. It's somewhere between a bench-top machine and a full size. It will do almost anything a knife maker would need and I picked it...

Need some new scale fitment ideas....

Well, I was hoping John would share some pics. I grabbed a junk blade and some pine and quickly roughed out an example. I'm not sure if this is the way it's done exactly, but you end up with a chamfered edge on the scales and/or the tang. In the pics, one side is ground flush, other has a bevel.

Need some new scale fitment ideas....

I scoured your Instagram before asking this because I thought I had seen you do it. I even googled "John Doyle knives" trying to find an example, but didn't see any. I thought I had seen Todd Begg do something similar too, but same thing, couldn't find any good examples. Is shadow boxed when the...

Need some new scale fitment ideas....

Well, no I was wanting the blade steel to show like a traditional full tang knife but with more pizazz. I'm making a couple with damascus and I want it to show, but just not the typical ground flush look.

    Knife Pool

I say no material requirements for sheath, maker's choice. That's part of the fun, seeing someone else's style and ideas.
