This has been an interesting discussion. I think the takeaway here in my mind as far as we makers are concerned would be to make the very best knife that we are capable of making, especially where fit and finish are concerned. If, after achieving a good fit and finish, one wants to venture out...

I've seen those plates and have always been interested in how they work. I'm afraid that I don't have any experience using them as I have always ground freehand, but I'm interested in understanding this process better. I hope someone will chime in who has used these before.

That's the one I use and I love it. I have a small shop and no room for a bench top tester, so I did some research and found this one. It works great and I don't have to dedicate bench space.

It’s natural Micarta. I think I purchased it from Boss Dog a while back. I can’t remember for sure. It does have that vintage look to it.
