I cover mine with a layer of masking tape. The tape wipes off easily. I also blow it off with my air compressor before I switch the blade. Mine does not have an off switch for the magnet. It's a pain to get the blade off.

I've had good luck with NJSB 1084. It's about all I use. I do stock removal and follow their heat treat recommendations which includes 3 normalizing cycles. I've broken several pieces and the grain looks great.

So I started with a new stencil a few weeks ago. I am very careful pulling off the tape and clean it thoroughly after each use. I just used it for the 10th time and it still looks as good as it did when I started with it.

Question for the group. As someone who is very new to hamons, I don't understand the discussion on thick v/s thin. Thinking out loud here, if the goal of the clay is to slow the cooling process to create the hamon, why wouldn't thicker be better? Wouldn't it add more time to cool? This...

Thank you. It's his variation of a template we use. To clarify, this is his second knife doing a stonewashed finish. I think he's made somewhere around 10 or 12 knives at this point.

What do you use to get the sticky residue off the stencil that the tape leaves? Ive tried Windex and soapy water, and it doesn't remove it. I go back and forth between painters tape and electrical tape. I haven't figured out which one I like best
