What's going on in your shop?

Just finished this one up. Haven't tried this before. Want to see if I can put in a link to a video.

    Another Makers Mark Question

I emailed Bo about the website. He didn't realize it was down. Apparently it was a problem with the ISP. Ernie's website is back up and running, and still has all of the info on it.

What's going on in your shop?

We'll see how this looks. Like I said before, it's my first chef knife. It's coming along better than I expected though. I got a good ht on it, so hopefully the pattern comes out well.

    Rubber platen?

So, I remembered why I had thought about the rotary platen setup. If you do corby bolt pins on handles, they are a beast to shape if you do a concave grind at the bottom of your handle, and not get a domed pin where the wood wears quicker than the pin. I always have to go back and do a decent...

    W2 and hamons - Normalizing/Grain Refinement Question...

I normalize and anneal my blades before I grind. I generally grind my blades to around 120 grit before I heat treat. I don't normalize again after grinding unless I really heat up the blade during grinding. You might be okay with wire brushing, but I would probably hit it on the grinder for a...

    Rubber platen?

A couple of grinder manufacturers make a rotary platen that will work for this type of procedure, but it will last because the "backing" rotates with the belt. I've never used one, but I've seen them in action, and they work well.

    W2 and hamons - Normalizing/Grain Refinement Question...

I speak from experience on this one. The first couple that I did had the clay fall right off while I was trying to heat it up for the quench, after I normalized with it on. I remember having this exact conversation with Ed after I did that.

    W2 and hamons - Normalizing/Grain Refinement Question...

Apply after. The thermal cycling can sometimes cause the clay to separate from the steel due to the difference in thermal coefficient of expansion. Clay it right before you are ready to quench.

    Best forge

I have a Habenero Chile Forge. Had it for a couple of years now. I don't have a lot of frame of reference, but it has worked really well for me. I've forged wielded in it no problem. It has a sacrificial floor that you can replace if you eat it up with flux.

Tutorials on Ricasso end scale shaping?

After you drill your pin holes through your scales, just put them together and run a pin through the holes so they will be pinned together like they would be on the knife. Then shape the end of the scales on the grinder the way that you want the top to be shaped.

    Another Makers Mark Question

So, I just got my new stencil from Bo Grospitch. The price was $70 for 10 stencils. He really worked with me to get my design to a point where it would etch cleanly. I also use his electrolyte recipe, and it does work really well. I also bought the power supply he recommended on his website...

What's going on in your shop?

It is ironwood from Arizona Ironwood, LLC. The blade is forged 1084, and the guard is 416SS. I will put a 416 pin in it when I glue it up.

What's going on in your shop?

My first fighter. This one is almost ready to glue up. Have to do some electro-etching, final touch-ups, then glue it up.
