Anyone made a Clay Spencer Tire Hammer?

I took that same class. That is literally the class that started me forging.

Anyone made a Clay Spencer Tire Hammer?

Virginia Institute of Blacksmithing does a yearly class to build one. They charge $2500 for the weekend, and you drive away with a power hammer. I may have to do this eventually.

What's going on in your shop?

Here ya go, John. Just finished it this morning. My first "tactical" knife. Parkerized 1075 blade with a parkerized mild steel guard. Frame handle with a black micarta frame, and G10 Ultrex Suretouch scales. 416SS pins.

What's going on in your shop?

Thanks! I really learned a lot on putting this together. I definitely did some things that I will change next time around. I left the tang too thick in the frame, thinking I wanted a lot of strength from having as much steel as I could. However, that resulted in the back edge of the frame...

What's going on in your shop?

First attempt at a frame handle knife. The blade and guard are going to be parkerized, then glued up and finished. I have a lot to learn, and have already discovered things to do differently the next time around. However, I may be liking frame handles now. 1075 blade, mild steel guard, black...

What's going on in your shop?

Just got a 10 inch contact wheel. Holy cow do I like that wheel. Here's another little one that I am getting ready. 220 grit and ready to be parkerized.

What's going on in your shop?

Well, here's the final shape. Hand sanded to 220 grit and ready to parkerize. Going to do a stainless guard and desert ironwood handle. We'll see how it turns out. Haven't parkerized anything yet.

    Quench tank

Don't drop anything in there to reduce the volume. You want a minimum of around 3 gallons to avoid the oil getting heated above it's usable temperature range while quenching, especially if you are going to heat treat more than one blade at a time. If you check the data on Parks 50, you...

    Quench tank

Use the Parks 50 if you are doing 10xx steels. Well worth the money, and it lasts for a long time. You won't be disappointed.

Stick tang or partial tang question

From my very limited experience, for me the length of the tang sometimes comes down to how long is my drill bit to get a particular thickness hole. I try to get my the slot in the handle as tight a fit to the tang as I can. I know I can buy longer drill bits, but generally since I am using 1/4...

What's going on in your shop?

This was one where my buddy has wanted one for a while, and I thought it would be a good practice to learn to make. I have a feeling I'll be doing some draw filing to clean it up once I get it to edge thickness. I am really close to that now, and just need to refine the edge thickness a...

    Newbie questions.

Your other option is to send your knives to a professional heat treater to be heat treated. I did that in the beginning, because you know you are getting a quality heat treat.

What's going on in your shop?

I've already seen how easy the grind can get away from you. I was able to correct one mistake to get it back to this point and ready to heat treat. I had reference lines everywhere to be able to see where I was grinding all around. It's a complex grind for sure, and I'm not convinced I will...

What's going on in your shop?

Trying to do my first dagger on a request from a friend. It's a learning experience to say the least. This one is ready for heat treat.

I'm jealous, Chris. I think I may have to invest in one of these eventually myself.

    600 Grit Belts?

Ed, the 3M cloth belt is very flexible. It is literally cloth impregnated with the abrasive. The grit level goes up to approximately 2000 grit. They are really good.
