I like Larrin's book because he teaches you how to choose steel and heat treat for what you want to make.

    Tuxedo Damascus gent's folder

Beautiful knife, John. Great presentation photo again, too. I'm intrigued by the damascus mix... idk - still learning - carbon content, toughness, and different contrasts? Looks overall very light and the twisted spine/backspacer is very cool.

Documenting Heat Treatment With Paragon's Bartlett Sentinel Controller

I agree! If it weren't for the crime and drug use in my area I'd do that too. I just know that when I leave for awhile and the house sits empty I can come home to find that stuff gone. But I choose to live in the area in order to be a part of making a difference or at least to offer the choice...

any good design ideas for push knives?

I have to figure out how to forge the shape. I have a blacksmithing book that had just a couple similar shapes but didn't really have the answer. The shapes were for tools made of thicker steel. The only idea I have is to cut a rectangular portion out of the lower corner of a peice of bar...

any good design ideas for push knives?

Just for fun I'll show you this one. This is one I cut out of a circ saw blade about a week ago and kept the cooling slot. It's 1/16 thick. It hardened in P-50. (Didn't harden in AAA and cracked in water.) The cooling slot made it look aggressive....for the tactical push knife that needs to...

any good design ideas for push knives?

The shape of this one is probably more what I'm thinking Something like this would be fine for leather work, too. looks elegant and comfortable and would suit the purpose.

any good design ideas for push knives?

I wondered how I could combine the comfortable knife I had with some nicer flowing design elements. I couldn't really see what angle the handle needed to be in relation to the edge in order to keep it comfortable and, also, more versatile. I like the relieved bevel behind the edge of this one...

any good design ideas for push knives?

Looks good. I liked the position of the point on the heel in relation to the handle. I've been looking around online some more this evening. I found a design element I liked that also emphasizes (for lack of a better word) the push cut along the heel. The edge was slightly extended in the back...

any good design ideas for push knives?

It'll probably be kitchen use. I didn't think she realized she wouldn't like the hook on the heel when she actually tried to use it - to pull back when cutting something. I found that, too. Ulus also. I guess a "quarter" knife is more like the shape I have going. I searched 'custom quarter...

    Old dog. New trick.

Those are on my list to get. I bought diamond stones - electroplated from Amazon - up to 2000, for finishing but they didn't give the look I wanted. I went back to 600 sandpaper finish for now.

any good design ideas for push knives?

That looks good. I like that tail end for leather. I need to make one for myself, too. I was surprised to learn the other names for them - I only knew them as leather knives. For our friend, I think she had kitchen use in mind. I could ask but wanted to surprise them with it. The pictures I...

any good design ideas for push knives?

We have a knife in the kitchen my wife loves and a friend of ours saw it and commented she would like one similar to it. Her and her husband have become friends of ours and a great support for us out here so I'd like to make it for them for nothing. But I've been kind of stuck on a design and...

Very nice knife/sheath combo. Sasquatch pin is original. Looks good!

What's going on in your shop?

I had never heard of a head knife. I searched it up and I got the search results "quarter" knife and "round" knife...similar to an ulu, but with a straight handle, and prodominately used for push cutting. It gives me some new ideas for a push cutting knife profile I've been stuck on.

2022 Knife in the Hat, Well it's getting to be that time of year

Beautiful blade! Not sure if it's just the lighting, but I like the more subtle contrast in the hamon line.

Documenting Heat Treatment With Paragon's Bartlett Sentinel Controller

That sound really good. I know what you mean about unknown temps. I often wonder if I should have started with an electric oven as a beginner. After reading on the forums it does not seem as expensive as I originally thought to run one. I would have to go 120v without getting in an...

    Arctic Air Mass

Yeah, i get that a lot, too. That’s why i was worried about my vfd and my electric motors at first. I'm not too worried about the controller anymore, its lasted a few interior winters. But when we warm up (from bitter cold to around 0) i do run my motors hoping that will clear any condensation...

I checked the weather this afternoon. It looked like everything east of the rockies was covered.
