WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

That was just a joke. I would rather make a Quillion Dagger than that knife... Great thread though MSGT.

WIP Survival Knife for My Son-In-Law

Glad you decided to post this build. Maybe we should do these for KITH this year...

Anyone Ever Tried to Make One of These?

Has to be a video game knife of some sorts. I would start with 3/16ths thick of whatever I had in the shop. If I were gonna try that, I would do the obvious. Make sure the offset section is at least 2 inches wide and grind the edges separately? If you grind freehand, I guess you could do it...

    hand forged vs. production

    I have seen that too.

AEB-L - When do you remove it from foil?

I remove it after the plate quench. I also clamp it to some aluminum blocks to minimize warping in cold treatment. If I am using thin material I also temper with it clamped to the blocks because to me it likes to warp a little more than simple steels.

    Welder under $1000.

Hey I never said no gas was a good idea, I just said it works to make billets hold together until I set forge welds. The very purpose of the welds are to be temporary, they are completely gone in an hour after I make them. I have never had them fail, they are cut off in the end and it saves my...

    hand forged vs. production

I am not sure if this is a real post or something else but I will bite and give my opinion. Forging a blade in and of itself, does not impart any better property to any given steel than any other manner of shaping a blade. In short (all things being equal) forging a blade does not make it...

Calling all Pattern Welded Steel Nerds (Must Watch)

You are the one to do it. Good luck I hope it works out.

    Welder under $1000.

I believe it is an Argon CO2 mix. In truth, and I know the true welders out there will cringe when I say this, but unless I am trying to produce "pretty" welds because someone will see them later, I do not use the shielding gas. Like on billets, those welds are just to get me through setting...

Calling all Pattern Welded Steel Nerds (Must Watch)

You got that right Daniel. I really do not know why I like it so much but I do. If I had more time to devote I think I could be happy just making and selling billets to other makers.

Next silly question. Post vise stand.

Mount it to anything sturdy or very heavy. I used to have mine mounted to the stand for my Fly Press because the stand was bolted to the floor of my shop. Then I made a custom striking anvil/swage block holder/welding table that turned out pretty heavy so I got a friend to actually weld the...

    Welder under $1000.

The Pro Mig 140 I run is 110v and it works just fine not only for billets but for welding work sitcks on too. Many times I have to cut the work stick off before I cut and re-stack the billet. Don't get me wrong, you can buy whatever you wish but if you are getting a welder just to keep billets...

Calling all Pattern Welded Steel Nerds (Must Watch)

I love making any kind of Damascus, if you are a forge welding nerd like me you must see this...This is a new study from Larrin Thomas where he looks at Pattern Welded (Damascus) Steels and tests them in very interesting ways. He gets some unexpected results. Its very worth the time to watch...

    Welder under $1000.

First, I am no welder but I can make metal stick together. I have a Lincoln Pro-Mig 140 I run with shielding gas and I have welded countless billets and more with it and no problems at all. $500

    Cable damascus

I have done cable before a few times but not a lot. My limited advice would be to start with the biggest piece you can handle with your equipment. That way you have some to cut off if there is a problem. If all goes well you will have some left for guards and bolsters. I do not remember Boss...

KMG-10 Grinder for sale - SOLD

Man, if you have that toward the end of this year I will buy it, I really want to add a second grinder to my shop. I am in Augusta Ga. Not too far from you. I will spread the word around here locally to se if I can help you sell it.

How Long Do You Use a Grinder Belt?

I treat them like tires...I use them until they are good for nothing else. That being said, I have learned the hard way not to use worn belts when you get close to final edge because they create more heat and I have burned a couple edges that way.

    Edge Pro Apex

I am amazed at all of the contraptions currently available to sharpen a knife these days. Some are expensive and some are not, I do not think any one person could try them all... I often hear a lot of my customers (and friends) say that they "cannot" use a normal whetstone to sharpen a knife...
