    Stabilized Curly Maple

Spalted Maple is one of my favorites. That is curly and spalted...win/win.

Looking for Identification of this wood

Looks like Mahogany to my eye. I am for sure, no expert.

    Thoughts on Gift Giving

I have taught many in my shop. Mostly knife making, maybe a couple of blacksmiths here and there. I have taught as young as 12 and as old as 65. Those who do not aggravate me (easier and easier to do nowadays) get invited back when I play in the shop. Those that aggravate me get a smile as...

    old age

You know I am going to get in on this thread because at 51 YOA I am the baby in the crowd and that does not often happen. I am worried about my 70's though because in my 50's I have two degenerated discs and arthritis in my shoulders, back, and hands (Thank you psoriasis and years of contact...

    Grinding position

When I dislocated my spine a few years ago I had to change to grinding in the seated position. I did not tilt my platen like that but had an adjustable stool to sit at the best height. Although it felt weird because I grind old school, standing with my elbows tucked in and arms stiff, it...

    The Laser Thread

That is a good machine. I have an ORTUR and that one is a step or three above my setup. I am no expert but I would think that would cover all of your needs and then some.

Thought I would share this use of scrap leather and my laser. Cool leather price tags!

    The Laser Thread

I have not used any air assist, so I cannot give an opinion on it except to say I do fine without it. The enclosure is a good idea if you have space in your shop for it. I like my setup portable so I can hang it on the wall when I do not use it mainly because I do not have a place to set up an...

Second on LightBurn. For complex stuff I design on Q-CAD then import into LB. That is mainly because I already know how to design in Q-Cad.

I actually had to etch a couple of AEB-L knives last night. The first pic is right off the laser at 150/min and 100% for four passes. The second photo is after I wiped it off with my shirt tail.

You can always get a can of Cer-mark or similar. It is easy to use and from what I hear, works well.

    Glass Patten

I welded a little piece of 1/4" square bar to the bottom of my platen to give the glass a perch. I have punished the whole setup for at least two years with no problems. I even had an "incident" where a long knife blade I was working on found its way behind my top platen wheel, between it and...

    The Laser Thread

I believe mine is set at 150/min at 100% for four passes. When it is done, it will look brown but you can just wipe the brown away with your finger and it is nice and black underneath. Just make sure you remember to set your laser focal length if you did not spring for the z-axis. It really...

    Glass Patten

You will not regret it. I like it better than regular steel platen. Some talk of static discharge issues but I have never experienced that with my set-up.

    Glass Platen Radius Size?

If my memory serves correctly, I just rounded the top and bottom somewhat to keep the belt from running across a 90-degree angle but I did not do anything to the sides. Works fine for me.

    Glass Patten

Bought it from USA Knifemakers. I am about due to replace it as well, thanks for the reminder.

Good choice. I do not regret mine one bit. So much more control than HT in a forge.

I cannot answer about the compressor, though my thoughts are the small one would be fine, but I can tell you I have never run any air assist on anything I have done with mine thus far. So if those do not work, no need to buy an air source right off.

Didn't plan on smithing, but I couldn't resist

You will be hooked. There is nothing like being able to make your own tools. Last weekend I was tearing out an old glued down wood floor in my kitchen and the stupid pry bar would not get under the wood. I tried everything and the only thing that got close was a garden hoe. I stopped...
