WIP: Full Featured 2x72 for under $1500?!? Housemade Gen 4 Revolution Kit Build

Time for the motor mounting plate. This is held on by filling plug welds to the receiver tubes. This is where TIG is difficult. With a MIG gun I could just basically shoot wire into the hole and fill ‘er up. Getting the tungsten and torch cup in there isn’t possible, so I extended the tungsten...

WIP: Full Featured 2x72 for under $1500?!? Housemade Gen 4 Revolution Kit Build

I really enjoy welding, which is one of the reasons I chose this route. I’m self taught on TIG, and honestly carbon steel more difficult for me than both stainless & aluminum. That’s the exact opposite of most, so I guess I’m weird. Anyways, here’s some progress shots as I’m waiting for it to...

Cut out the tracking pillar last night. 1:1 templates are included in the plan package, which is pretty cool. Makes it mostly idiot proof, but I intend to put that to the test! Realized by changing my portaband blade just how dull the original blade was. New blade cut much faster &...

Ken, I appreciate your input. But this thread isn't intended to be a review on the merits of this grinder over others, yet. I intend it to be a WIP as I fab up and assemble the Revolution kit. I'm not looking at this kit, I've already purchased it and wanted to offer to take along anyone who...

No, this is not from the diktator folks. I don't think Brian sells his kit on eBay. I'm not sure if we can post links here, but if you go to "housemade.us" you order it directly from Brian. This is NOT the OBM/Diktator/whatever their name is this week folks. I looked at those, too and they...

WIP: Full Featured 2x72 for under $1500?!? Housemade Gen 4 Revolution Kit Build

I actually bought my TIG machine expressly because TIG was the only method that I had completely failed at and given up on as a younger man. So I made a commitment to learn it so I could weld aluminum and anything else I wanted with the benefit of not throwing sparks and slag everywhere in my...

    Problem with Electro Etching?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your issue then. To me it looks like your electrolyte migrated under your stencil and etched your blade where you didn't want it to. I'm not understanding the "bleeding corrosion" part of your question. Corrosion doesn't "bleed", but if your blade isn't...

    Problem with Electro Etching?

Use less etchant and neutralize. Also, don't tape your stencils on all four sides. Give your stencil a place to vent and drain.

What's going on in your shop?

I'm building a Revolution grinder in my shop. I've started a WIP in "WIPs & Tutorials": https://www.knifedogs.com/threads/wip-full-featured-2x72-for-under-1500-housemade-gen-4-revolution-kit-build.53587/#post-435187 Check it out, ask questions, make suggestions, tell me I'm a fool, whatever!

Starting with the receiver tubes, the holes were drilled with my little Shop Fox 12" benchtop drill press and then tapped for the tooling arm stop knobs. I am continually reminded that this size drill press is a compromise, and one that I think I will remedy with a mini mill in the future...

Here's the parts. Laser cut parts & fasteners in the first pic, tube set in the second. The tubes were soaked in vinegar for 48 hrs to remove mill scale then softened edges and buffed with a surface conditioning belt on my little Norse 2x42 that this will be replacing. The squarish flat...

This is the path I chose to take, and I think there are enough new guys like me out there that might benefit from knowing that there is another high quality, made in USA option out there that doesn't require selling a kidney to have. I'm not sponsored or affiliated by anyone in anyway, and I...

    Let's see your anvil stand!

Mines just glued & screwed scrap 2x6s and a few slabs of douglas fir on the ends. I used pieces of .375" rubber flooring on the bottom of the anvil and again on the bottom of the anvil stand. It was all scrap, so it essentially cost nothing. I flame treated it for looks. Solid piece.

What's going on in your shop?

I do. I'd suggest lining it with several layers of foil, or foiled duct tape, or something similar to take the heat of the sparks. The plastic will stipple and will likely fail over time without shielding. I have a dust collector hooked up, and it does a good job of keeping the dust down in...

    Calculating steel

Modeling clay is a useful tool in seeing what you can end up with for a given volume of steel stock. You can also "forge" the clay out to plan your heats, and strategy to get your final shape. This is a pretty quick way to learn without the additional time and expense of forging steel and...

    Ideas for half-tang scales ?????

We were gifted a sandwich spreader from my in-laws that was constructed just like fitzo described. Puppy got ahold of it and chewed up the wooden handle, so I re-handled it in black G10 with 0.060" (I think) toxic green G10 liner material sandwiched (no pun intended, but hey...) bewtween that...

    Hello from Southeast Wisconsin

Thank you very much! I'm pretty particular and a harsh critic of myself. I'm also painfully slow as a result. I'm always in awe at how some guys can crank blades out, but I know speed & efficiencies will come with time & experience.
