Heat Treating thin Stainless Steel in a propane forge?

15N20 is an excellent option for forge heat treating. The forgiveness of a simple steel, essentially 1075 (a great spring steel) with a dash of nickel added that gives a bit of resistance to acid staining. Not stainless, but much better than improperly HT'd AEB-L. If you already have success...

    New integral

An integral for your third forged blade is outstanding! Be really cool to see some more detailed pics. I really like the lacewood scales, too.

    Heat Treat Question

I don’t know for sure, but I would be willing to bet that your hardness would stay stable at 59 with a second temper cycle. I get why you don’t want to, though.

    My first knife

Heat Treating thin Stainless Steel in a propane forge?

If you try to sell whatever it is, please be sure to disclose your HT procedure so your potential customers know what they are buying. ETA: one big reason stainless steels require specific times & temps to get the chromium into solution and distributed into the steel’s lattice structure in...

Heat Treating thin Stainless Steel in a propane forge?

This won’t be the answer that you want to hear, but your results will not be what you want to end up with using a forge with AEB-L. It’s that simple. You should consider sending your project out to a pro if you want usable results. Most anti-scales will break down at around 2000F, AEB-L...

Another "I want to build a press" thread....

Already have. We've been in touch. That thread is what drove me to this decision. I really enjoyed your modeling work on that thread.

What's going on in your shop?

That's good info, but I was talking about the knife steel. Tell us about that sweet CuMai!

What's going on in your shop?

@opaul , you can't just drop knife steel like that on a post about butt caps and not mention it. C'mon man, details!

Another "I want to build a press" thread....

Thanks, Ken. This is the one I found: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B094FTG36T/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AQPN6QOFJFC53&psc=1 I like that C-face so I can hard mount the pump to the motor with a Hydra-Mount. I think this is the smarter way, plus I think I can up my pump to a 16gpm and...

Yes, I believe so. That’s how I’m understanding it, anyways.

    Combination Press/Hammer

I would love to see how the stresses play out in this. It looks like a lot of movement. I also am not sure how much I "need" a hammer. Oh, I know I'll use it if I have it, but maybe that's a project for another day. A press I can see the immediate use for. This courtship with making a...

    Combination Press/Hammer

I posted this on another forum, but it really didn't get any traction. @Kev 's recent thread re-sparked my interest and @Gliden07 's build thread prompted me to bring the conversation here, where guys seem way more interested in the technical aspects of tacking a project like this and the...

Thank you for that. I’ve watched a bunch. What I’m looking for is flex & deflection, if any, in his structural design because I like it.

    Mini press aka-shoulder saver 3000

I get that. But for a hobbiest maker building for a couple hundred bucks & a few days vs. building for a couple thousand and several weeks, or buying outright for $4K it is an attractive option. I’m not making a living making damascus billets on the daily.

You sparked some interest from me in maybe doing something similar on the cheap. You think you might be willing to post some video of you running it?
