    Knife design ipad

Thanks, Bradley. I had already downloaded and installed. :) Nice GUI, I look forward to poking around in it. I've been thinking lately about buying a PC again so I can subscribe to Corel Draw. I used to use the heck out of that prog to design engraving layouts years ago, but switched to Mac for...

    Knife design ipad

My response was in regards to the OP's question about iPad apps. Since MacOS and iOS are different operating systems, apps don't cross over between versions. I happen to have Affinity on both my iPad and MacBook but they are separate programs and purchases. I'll look at Inkscape just for grins...

    Temper question

In addition to the comments about retained austenite and the need for brevity regarding the time between quench and temper: Freshly crystallized martensite has pointy corners. That sets up huge stresses and allows for easier propagation lines in micro- and macro-cracking. Tempering rounds the...

    Florida hurricane...

@Drew Riley Glad to hear your FiL is okay. It must have been harrowing. Thank you for the clearest info yet on the devastation on Pine Island. Hope your in-laws have as few stumbling blocks on their path to recovery as possible.

It's been eroded for quite a while sitting in the ground. The top of the left piece looks kinda sorta like the root base of a tooth.

What's going on in your shop?

    I bet those $20 punches didn’t look artisan-made! I really like that, 52Ford! :)

    Florida hurricane...

Cousin's wife spoke with my sister last night. They're all fine and found a place with appropriate medical equipment to support my aunt. I was correct, he designed and built the house. The base construction element was shipping containers on a stilt house. The house seems pretty intact via sat...

    Florida hurricane...

I have my "twin" cousin on Pine Island and his 95 year old mother living on Pine Island and Fort Myers respectively. They went inland before the storm. Haven't heard anything about them, but his house is up on stilts and he built it to take this crap, so we'll see.

Hand sanding a convex grind on a kitchen knife

I use pink rubber erasers to conform to hollow grinds. Fits 1" shop roll great. Same idea should work on a convex, though you might want a larger substrate. Perhaps something like a piece of crepe sole.

What's going on in your shop?

@REK Knives Josh put a heat treated A2 wheel on his SGA. Maybe he'll tell us what tolerances he's getting now and how it's holding up.

    First post, first knife made

Welcome! Just one piece of advice - don't EVER let that knife go. When it's the ugliest duckling in your collection you will still always hold the warmest place in your heart for your firstborn. Ya did good. Make the next one now and incorporate what you've learned!

What's going on in your shop?

I never converted mine to belts. The idea was relatively new in the wild about the time I got sick and had to quit knives. I had hopes of buying a commercial unit as Bertie Rietveld was selling them and his then-exotic bright yellow polyurethane hi-durometer wheels. Unfortunately that was 20...

WIP: Full Featured 2x72 for under $1500?!? Housemade Gen 4 Revolution Kit Build

That's a beautiful machine. I've really enjoyed your build thread, Eric. Thanks! While I agree with Ken that it doesn't need it, the gusset piece is all ready to lay in there. I'd go for the overkill, personally. :D

    Stabilizing Juice

Thank you! I have not heard that term in the 20 years I have been out of the lab. Coming across it in the middle of a knife forum, it was a strange moment of gears clicking back together that haven't been engaged in a long time. Pretty cool instant. Thanks, again! :)

    Stabilizing Juice

I learned from many years in the lab that a lot of magic can happen between that 28" and 29" mark on the vac gauge. That requires a 2-stage pump.

WIP: Full Featured 2x72 for under $1500?!? Housemade Gen 4 Revolution Kit Build

Congrats on the build, Eric! Very sharp machine, and I am very happy you got the VFD worked out. As, for the manual, that was just a Google. I am thrilled it helped. You are most welcome; it is my pleasure to help. Nice machine! Hope it provides decades of trouble-free operation. Thank you so...
