    New forge

I have to agree with you, Mr Doyle. I went through a couple hundred pounds of 1084 and 15N20 back in my day from both Admiral and Kelly Cupples and never did more than grind off the abrasive-cutoff burr. Didn't experience any inclusions poor folding/pressing technique didn't cause.

Thanks for the WIP, Chris! I miss this stuff a lot and love forged steel threads.

    Arctic Air Mass

We hit -7F overnight. Maybe 2" of snow total. No power outages. 0*F right now at 3:30PM and the wind continues to whip pretty good at times, but this is much better than we were led to expect, so we're quite grateful to Mother Nature right now. Hope everyone is getting through this OK.

    Arctic Air Mass

There "oughtta" be a price for getting to live in MT! :) Cold is that price! Hope you don't have too bad a time with the power, Bob. You have a big generator as normal out that way? I need to get one. We've dropped about 20F the past three hours, snow turned from big flakes to near sleet, and...

    Arctic Air Mass

Here, north of Chicago 35 miles and a mile from Lake Michigan, it has just started to snow some slow drifting flakes at noon. Temp is 30F. Supposed to have -6F and windy tonight but they have downgraded the snow prediction from 16-18" down to 4" over the last two days so who knows. It'd be nice...

    Help indentifying

A "rubbing" with paper and lead pencil can sometimes reveal more detail than is obvious to the naked eye.

    Enjoying tools

After a dozen years of being physically unable to negotiate stairs to the basement shop, and too sick to be interested, it has been a real joy to recover both the ability and the interest to get into my shop again. I love just being down there amongst the machines and tools, and though I'm not...

Help Identifying an Old Fixed Blade

Utica Cutmaster link at ebay. Sportsman link at ebay. These are listed all over ebay as "vintage" and "rare" yet I seem to remember one being stuck in a stud of just about every garage as a child. Frank at the local Phillips 66 had them in a case for sale. I saw Chris's pic of the knife above...

    tool or weapon

It's for carving at the dining table. After carving, extend "foot" and it keeps the tines off the table cloth when set down. Set the knife across the fork and the stop at the top to keep it from sliding. No meat juices on the table cloth. Back when we were futzier about those things...

What's going on in your shop?

I just have never seen 15n20 etch that dark. Wondering if the hammering and the grinding took a whole layer off? That was the intent of the first question about the edge view. That, and what the hell is the second steel if 15N20 etches that dark? Regardless my confusion with the colors, you...

What's going on in your shop?

Did you by chance try a piece of neat 15N20 in that mix after the etch shown above?

What's going on in your shop?

1018 is high in Mn. It should turn black. Did you by chance clean up the edge before etch such that you can see the layers? Weld looks quite successful. Congrats! Now you open another whole can of worms on your knife making adventure. LOL

    Knife ID

Filipino pinute, perhaps? Or, it might be a version of a parang with a pointy rather than blunter machete tip.

Hand sanding liquid? Windex vs tapping fluid?

Don't particularly like Windex, prefer WD-40. I'll try some Tap Magic next time, and some Cool Tool II. Thanks for the tips!
