Magnacut Question - equalizing soak or not?

I got a response from Larrin. He said, quite simply, that he sees equalization as an optional step for home heat treating of knives, and that Magnacut is no exception. There you go. Straight from the PhD metallurgist who designed the steel and wrote the engineering book on modern knife steels...

Magnacut Question - equalizing soak or not?

Thanks! I read the whole page, and only noted in my post that they say it both ways, so to speak, different at top and bottom. Not saying anything beyond that. With that dichotomy, the question remains unanswered. I'll post if I hear from Larrin. Other than that, I'm out, too. Not looking to...

Magnacut Question - equalizing soak or not?

I note that the "Recommended Heat Treatment" down towards the bottom of all that doesn't include the equalization.

Magnacut Question - equalizing soak or not?

Not a worry, opaul. If I am wrong about that equalization step, I am wrong. And I accept that without rancor. The "right" steps to make the best knife for its intended purpose are the right steps. And if I state otherwise, I hope to heck someone notices. There's more than enough misinformation...

Magnacut Question - equalizing soak or not?

Feel free to diasagree if I'm wrong, @opaul! If I'm wrong I want to know right. I will find why I misunderstood, and am glad you corrected me. Thank you. I apologize for posting incorrect info. I try and stay out of HT threads nowadays, and I should have known better. The understanding I had...

Magnacut Question - equalizing soak or not?

Larrin Thomas designed the steel. His recommendations for HT are on his Knife Steel Nerds website. All one ever wanted to know about Magnacut, and more: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/03/25/cpm-magnacut/ IMO - soaks are usually intended for thicker cross sections than knife thicknesses. The...

CA Glue on a Wood Handle

Remember that CA absorbs water. Will a full CA finish on a knife cloud if left wet? Does it return to clear when it dries? A multi-coat CA finish can be a beautiful thing, like having 30 coats of Danish oil on a piece of furniture. Gives it depth and appeal.

    Paracord wrapped handles.

FWIW, there are only two knives with paracord-wrapped handles in the 2024 edition of Knives. There are a couple wrapped Japanese-style handles, but only two small fighters having paracord with the internals stripped as wrap. Seems of waning popularity right now. Things come and go and come back...

    Cheap Drill bits

I don't see a lot of difference buying Harbor Freight or purchasing "import" from a supply house like MSC. Some of their stuff is good, some sucks. Caveat emptor. Cheap is cheap, one has to expect lower quality. A H&R rifle isn't a Weatherby, so to speak, and shouldn't be expected to be. Having...

    Cheap Drill bits

I agree, Darren, the Darex can be tricky if you don't learn and pay attention. But, then, most machine tools are that way. With the old unit I own (much less than $4k, I promise. LOL), it is ALL about getting that drill indexed properly in the manual jig. And, yes, it is a "feel" thing that only...

    Cheap Drill bits

Mine is ancient, Ken. I bet I've had it 30 years. The one I have was meant to be on the toolroom floor. You got the baseplate, jig, hardware, stone, and supplied your own bench grinder. :) If you google them again, I had the old, gold unit. I found that I couldn't get good, consistent...

    Cheap Drill bits

A friend turned me on to buying plain tool steel Harbor Freight bits by the dozen in the smaller sizes that my fancy Darex sharpener couldn't handle re-sharpening consistently. I use them for 1 to 6 holes and toss them as soon as I notice the dulling. They make great try pins. Anything over 3/16...

AFib seems a strange beast. At first I didn’t realize there are different presentations of the electrical abnormality, and kept bugging the cardiologist because my buddy is getting his stuff treated and all I got was a couple pills? All he said was, “your problem won’t respond to those...
