Forge and knife shaped object (non hardenable)

Sharing post from instagram I am not sure how to share things well here but the link above should get my text and all 7 photos. I can go copy and paste the text but can't share photos from my phone(the forum always complains they are too big), I have to do that from my desktop computer. :( If...

Got my brick perhaps I will make a forge tonight.

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

It is totally awesome to watch. But I don't see it in my immediate future. :)

Thanks! Yeah, perhaps when my brick gets here today. :) Definitely cool to see the metal move, but I really don't want to be doing a bunch of forge work.

To paraphrase Doug Marcaid "It will grip!" So far, an Oxy-Acetylene rig is not a replacement for a forge, especially not without a second person involved.

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

I ordered a soft brick, it will be here tomorrow. I did see someone make one from the hard fire bricks. I am not sure how I would feel about red bricks nor what their insulation qualities are. But I would not be too concerned about them.exploding. The induction coil looks fun, and it is...

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

I may give it a shot. But I think I will stop at Lowe's to ight and pick up a proper 6" one anyway. My son promised to have tanks for me tonight, and I have a brick on the way by tomorrow just in case. So one way or the other I will have some tongs soon. Love to get one of those induction things...

I doubt it is worth welding. Though perhaps. I have not really done a lot of cast iron welding. Silver solder to the rescue!!

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

Well, broke a vise. Apparently over-tightening it then trying to chisel in a groove with "not hot enough" steel, creates some stresses that a little cast iron vise is not meant to take :) And Mapp/pro doesn't get this metal hot enough.. Unfortunately depending on someone else to do my tank...

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

Okay, so a simple propane torch will not get this material anywhere near read. I've seen some blue, but mostly I am getting a nice silvery grey. Unfortunately, I am out of O2/C2H2 and will have to wait on a tank exchange. I have cut steel with that rig, so I know it will get hot enough...

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

Yeah, well that clinker was all over our roads as of first snow. So if you were sledding hills you would eventually hit it. It would slice you up but good! Thorns are fun too. I wasn't sure you could get much anthracite outside of PA, figured there would be plenty bituminous elsewhere. But...

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

I grew up in NE PA and of course, I constantly heard about Anthracite Coal. Used to go to the state park and pick up chucks of it the size of bowling balls off of the ground. Cool stuff. There were plenty of homes still burning it when I was growing up, and they would put out the ash cans on the...

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

It's just that I've never tried. If it was something critical, I just automatically went to O/A but with my little bitty tanks, I don't want to waste the O2 if I don't have to :(

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

Does that put you in Pennsylvania? I was unaware that MAPP was gone. I guess the real question is "is propane" sufficient for bending or whatever it is I have to do to the tongs?

Tong choices or big pliers maybe?

We'll see what I can do with some propane or I can pick up a can of Mapp. I really don't want to waste oxygen on them if I don't have to. Especially since I only have the small OA rig.

Yep, I have those gloves, and a pretty thick leather apron. I am already geared up for welding both O/A and mig so I do have some high heat PPE
