I don't think he believes that we are rubes. He tries to make light of those unwilling to educate themselves with a single use of a search function. Most of what I've learned in knife making has come from countless hours of reading, and pulling my hair out while failing. If knifemaking were easy...

Your words are to big and complicated for me..... semordnilap? I don't even want too take the time to look it up. It also makes me wonder how much you've had to drink?;) I clamp in temping, using dimes and nickels too get the blade straight. Every time I tried to re-heat treat the blade and...

    Re heat treat 1095

Hopefully Kevin will be along to help answer your question. In my limited experience all high carbon steels benefit from some sort of heat cycling. I like to start at 1600 and work my way down in 50 degree increments too 1450, or lower.

    Re heat treat 1095

What was your heat treat regimen? Did you do any thermo-cycling, or a soak time at temp? You don't need to do anything but heat treat it again, just remember every time you do the grain gets smaller making it harder for the steel to harden.

Got the Itch, Need some guidance on what to acquire

$3000 sounds like a lot of money, not having any tools it is not going to go far. I just spent 2 weeks at the intro to bladesmithing class in Hope Arkansas. We used anvils from 77 to 265 pounds. Using the larger anvils was a huge time savings vs. using a smaller one. Personally I would buy a...

    Shipping for steel

Some info on Certs, or MTR's (mill test reports). As far as I know all steel is tested as it comes of the rolling mill, or in the VAT. Steel is a commodities market and rather cut throat, it is not uncommon for suppliers to print their own mtr without the header from the mill. Why would they do...

    Shipping for steel

Another way of looking at buying bulk quantities, you can dial in your heat treat on that steel. If it's a steel you see yourself using for sometime, it will give you peace of mind knowing that your heat treat is good. Wether it's heat treated tomorrow, or 10 years from now.

What's going on in your shop?

The forge I ordered from Mathewson Metal came in. This morning I fired it up to cook off all the paint. Not wanting to waste propane I forged a leaf..... then my add kicked in and a couple hours later I had my first forged knife.

These knives have challenged me every step of the way. I enjoy the knowledge gained, even when the end result is a loss. That's just how it goes in knife making. There is a spot on the edge of this blade that will not harden. After several attempts at re-heat treating the blade I'm throwing the...

    Tracking Problem

You may have crushed the bearings some. I did the same, and made a washer out of .020 brass. It now as true as any tooling on my KMG.

    First finished knife.

Very nice first knife! Most people's first knives look like prison shanks. Yours looks like it was well thought out, and care was taken in the fit and finish.

It is based off of Nick's design. I didn't put the cup in the bolt because he mentioned in his video that it wasn't needed.
