    Question about washers & bearings

A manual opening modern knife (most all custom knives) use either washers, or bearings. Never both. Bearings are essentially a small race of ball bearings trapped in a washer. They ARE the washers. There are some modern quality knives, like FRN models of spyderco knives, that make very good...

Shop Music Thread- what are you listening to today?

Another one of my all time favorites. And one of the all time greatest guitar players, sadly often overlooked and left off of "Best" guitar greats lists.

New Bandsaw Blade for Thin Metal

I ordered some of those from Amazon as they were a little cheaper. I won't waste my money again. Teeth tore off almost instantly and blade was shot after half an hour. I used 4 blades and same thing happened on all of them. Mine were 14-18 TPI variable. But my regular blades are always 14 TPI...

Stainless Bolsters - Glue or No Glue Before Peening?

You know this thread has raised a good point and a couple of you guys have touched on it. Sometimes the BEST approach and BEST wisdom is in walking away from a process, method or material that causes you grief and makes the end product something you're not happy with. Periodically examining...

    Gerber Paraframe 1 Lock Issues

I think the next logical step in your journey could be something like Civivi brand. I hear really positive things about them being a lot of knife for the money with great features and quality materials and really good fit and finish. I believe there are quite a few models well under $100. I...

    Gerber Paraframe 1 Lock Issues

Also, my son has the same knife. I just looked. His does the same thing only it unlocks easily no matter what. Honestly, it's not a very well made knife so this issue is not surprising. I will add that the action is very stiff and it doesn't open easily and you REALLY have to flip it open...

    Gerber Paraframe 1 Lock Issues

Press it into a piece of wood as though you were whittling really hard and see if it does it. Make sure to not influence the lock bar with your grip. There might be two separate issues going on and both might not be able to be fixed. This could just be a by product of a really inexpensive...

    1084 heat treat help

Were any thermal treatments of any sort done to the steel prior to austenitizing/quenching? Have you actually verified your oven accuracy? Personally, I'd ditch canola oil for 1084 but it might not be the main culprit.

    1084 heat treat help

Where on the blades did you test? Did you do any grinding/clean up prior to testing? Those are two of the standard troubleshooting questions.

    What oil do you use?

It's pretty hard to beat 3 in 1 oil. I've used a ton of different types but always come back to that.
