Ya know what grinds my gears?

Another thing: when I don't pay attention to where the spacer is when I do the final flattening squish in the press .... especially after nailing the forging at the heel:mad:.

    cutoff saw?

I've got one and don't use it much, preferring an angle grinder and cutoff discs for most of what I do. It's good for cutting larger quantities of larger stock, and really good at cutting hot stock while forging, but I don't use mine much. As mentioned above, too loud, too much mess.

Thanks for the recommendation, Doug. Out of curiosity, do you have Dr. Larrin Thomas' book, and if so, does the video have better/more/different info or is it easier to understand?

What's going on in your shop?

Great to hear! But with 25+ years in the rehab field, allow me to mention (if your doctor hasn't already) that it sounds like you are in the the dangerous portion of your recovery/rehab, feeling good enough to push yourself to the point of doing some serious damage. Be careful.

Pointing out flaws in your work

This is the typical reaction I've always gotten, too. But I tend to follow-up with, "But you are a friend/relative of mine, and not a random stranger who is paying hundreds of dollars for a tool that they could pay $30 to do the same task." Sometimes, in the excitement of the moment, things like...

Pointing out flaws in your work

I agree here. I see these the same as, "the handle isn't as dark a brown as I'd like...." which could be totally subjective. What I would caution you about is to take some time and think about how you will feel about this with 5 more years as a maker under your belt and having these early...

One way is to not sell any knife that has any of those issues.

    Makers Mark Stencils Comparison

Now, I just started etching my mark on blades, so don't have too much experience yet. But can't this be minimized by lowering the amps(voltage?) and/or using more, but shorter, periods of time with the etcher actually etching, and giving the blade and stencil more 'rest' periods allowing them...

    Hey There

Hello @I102BS , welcome. Might I suggest joining the NWBA and plan on attending some of the events at the mentoring center in Longview (unless COVID flare-ups put a pause on in-person gatherings again). Plenty of members who are Knifemakers in the group.

I made this and thought I would share

I'd bet this has as much to do with it as anything. Aren't the manufacturers shooting for an acceptable range of % of each alloying agent as much as a specific amount of each?

I made this and thought I would share

I'm not sure I agree. After all, we are dealing with physical materials that should have known properties. So the folks who study this should be able to know what the "right" answer when they can control as many variables as possible. One of the problems is, do we really know all the...
