Ordering from Amazon... what do you guys think?

If you have to use Amazon, then the only thing I'd be concerned about is if the price was "too good to be true", because then it probably is....

The article is titled: METALLOGRAPHY OF A MODERN PATTERN-WELDED STEEL KNIFE BLADE Authored by: Thomas Nizolek in: ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES/FEBRUARY 2009, pp 24-25 The article talks mostly about carbon migration. "For this investigation, a bar of pattern-welded steel was created from...

This is one of the negatives to damascus/patttern welded steels. You have to choose/guess as to what is the best HT regime for the combination of steels, and won't be able to maximize the properties of both steels. One of the reasons I use the 1080/1084 and 15N20 combination is that I've heard...

Damascus and High Carbon Steels are not food safe -- aka the Jay Fisher Rabbit Hole

Yes, but don't forget that there are a lot of realities out there. ;) I know at least a few professional chefs from various cities across the country who have said that the knives aren't what the inspectors are looking at, and are using damascus knives with natural wood handles that they take...

    A knife for the hounds

I'm in the process of moving my shop, and because I don't drive, it's unclear exactly when that will happen. It was supposed to happen this week, but the person who was supposed to drive is MIA so... If you don't find anyone, feel free to message me and I'll see what we can do.

    New Hammer die

You've got it right, Ken. Sorry I wasn't more clear. What I meant (hopefully this is clearer, but I'm not so sure:eek:...), was that when punching a hole in steel, basically you first make a thin wafer, then shear that thin wafer/plug. In flat stock, it's easy to use your punch (usually flat...

    New Hammer die

Like @Gliden07 said, a little of both. Typically, on larger stock you punch from both sides, so the plug ends up shearing off in the middle of the stock. Not quite like punching a flat bar where you punch until you bottom out on the anvil and then flip the stock to remove the plug.

    San mai and/or laminated steel

I use 1080/15N20 for my billets, and if you don't find a source by the end of the year, go ahead and send me a message and I'll play....but I won't have time until I get back in town and move my shop on Dec 27th....
