What's going on in your shop?

Got the rest of the wood wall up under the tarp, so it goes foam, plywood or osb, then the tarp. Got the shelving unit built and 2/3 of the belt hooks up. I am going to add more hooks for the belts to some of the plywood walls on the long side. Then I need to seal the seams in the ceiling...

    Sharpening question.

Many people complain knife edges don't last or chip easily and the common reply is that the edge is sharpened with a belt sander and/or buffed, which can overheat the edge too much, weakening the steel and to sharpen it fully a couple times to remove the damaged/weakened/overheated steel. I...

    Sharpening question.

Glass stones are excellent stones!! They cut high alloy and lower alloy nicely and quickly. What types of knives are you sharpening? First time using water stones? I would probably go with a lower grit final stone? I usually end up with a 5K edge before stropping. It retains some bite...

    Drilling A Wa Handle

I use a spade drill bit and a pen vise for drilling wa handles. Dont use the screw tipped spade bit; they will pull the blank into the drill bit and you will drill deeper than you want really quickly. I got this one a long time ago and there are much simpler ones too...

Thanks! Some better pics of the blue camo handles. Taking pics outside in natural light tends to wash out the colors a bit.

I am loving Magnacut! I have done a 210mm kitchen knife and the 6 blades here. It takes a wicked fine edge and holds it very well, and strops right back to stupid sharp. Not too bad to work and finishes well, too! Price isnt much more per knife than S35vn or cpm154.

    First time forging questions

I used AAA, but I know others have used Parks 50 before with good results as well. I believe Larrin did some testing/research with that?

    First time forging questions

1084/1070 or 8670 both forge pretty well and are forgiving heat treating wise.

    Coated Stainless: Another Silly Question.

The coatings also usually make the blade less susceptible to scratches and stuff on the surface, as well as darkening the surface. DLC and PVD coatings are extremely hard.

    Clean shop for New Years

I warned you! I had a mad rush before the Holidays getting everything finished up, so it was worse than usual. I had to move stuff back and forth to get the ladder there to remove the upper plastic, so that made it worse, too. Once I get lights hung, everything except the larger equipment is...

    Clean shop for New Years

When I ripped down the plastic, tons of dust came down on everything and I had to move stuff around to get the ladder up there too. I want to spend a day just pulling everything out, doing some cleaning and sorting. I have nice cabinets to use, but they are empty because there is too much...

    Clean shop for New Years

Told ya mine was bad! This is all of the stuff I basically have to pull out, vacuum, organize and then put back in the correct place. The plastic curtain on the left is where the foam wall is going. I want to reinforce the foam wallwith plywood soon, too. I put furring strips under the...

    Clean shop for New Years

I got started on my shop cleaning yesterday. Got the foam insulation board hung on the ceiling and the furring strips and 3 of the 4 vertical foam boards hung along the side yesterday and removed the plastic that used to be hanging and removed the fluorescent lights. Next step is to hang the 4...

    Making a Japanese Samurai Sword

They can bend easily!! Cutting poorly can easily result in a badly bent blade. Tameshigiri ruins a lot of blades and people recommend not using a valuable historical antique blade for doing tameshigiri because it can greatly devalue it, plus need more polishing and restoration. You need to...

    Making a Japanese Samurai Sword

Yeah, 1095 or 26C3 or W2, wrapped around 1045 core, forge it out, do a Hamon on it, grind on a belt sander, Micarta handle, call it good! LOL, but it won't look as beautiful!! It's really cool to see the grain of the steel! One of the blades I have you can actually see different shades/colors...

    Making a Japanese Samurai Sword

Yeah, a Tatara furnace is what they use. Black Iron sand is smelted with charcoal over a long time period (couple days in Japan typically) where they keep adding more sand and charcoal. It creates a big chunk, which is then further broken down and graded by quality and carbon. How they do...

    Making a Japanese Samurai Sword

It's a pretty lengthy process! They start with raw tamahagane, forge it down to the discs, break it and re stack it based on carbon content. Water quenching right from forging should make the steel very brittle and large grain, but it took several strikes to break some pieces. The steel is...
