What's going on in your shop?

Yeah, I am waiting until I can get more consistent forging results with 52100 before going to the ApexUltra! Heat/hammer control isn't that great yet, so I have been practicing on other steels. The AU I have is around .200" thick, so it's already fairly thin. I want to make a chef knife from...

What's going on in your shop?

Working on these. Orange AmeraGrip on Nitro V and Canvas Micarta and green pins/liners on the Magnacut one. Had a 52100 failure. Working on this 6" blade, found some squiggles near the spine, put in a vise and snapped it easily. Guessing from working it too cold? But at least I know...

    HT oven build!

I have the coils over tubes in the top of the oven, so I would have to cut those grooves anyway. I was looking at repurposing kilns for the bricks and stuff. It's around $200 for brand new bricks (about $240 for 3" bricks IIRC). I will keep looking and see if I can scavenge the bricks from...

    HT oven build!

So I think I figured out the issue. Even after sealing around the door, stuffing the grooves for the quartz tubes with insulation, larger brick at the corners, etc, it was still slow. Around 3 hours to get to 2200 degrees! On BFC, one of the guys mentioned the Chinese IFB. Yup, mine looked...

    Whats going on?

I have been busy with work and stuff and try to post a bit here and there with what I am working on, but there hasn't been much traffic on the site in the last several months. I think the slower economy means people are picked up less new hobbies or spending money on knives and stuff unless the...

What's going on in your shop?

Did some forging a couple weeks ago. Left 2 are 8670, middle is 52100, right 2 are 144 layer 125CR1/15N20 damascus, and first ladder attempt! Nitro V and Vintage Tri Color Canvas Micarta handles, natty micarta pins and lanyard tube: And the first 125cr1/15N20 blade! Kevlar guard and...

    Looking for Grinder Recommendations

I like my AmeriBrade! I don't use many accessories, so the larger 2" tool arm isn't much of a concern to me. The misting topic is a good point for an aluminum grinder, but I wet my belts with a sponge and haven't had any major rusting issues on my AmeriBrade yet after doing that for a couple...

What's going on in your shop?

Used my oven for stainless finally! 10 Magnacut blades and 2 AEB-L blades heat treated and cryo'd at home!! Process went well using the foil packets and then the nitrogen. Tempering took a while because I was creeping down on the HRC numbers (Magnacut was 63-65 after the first 300 degree...

What to do when the number of knives exceeds quench capacity?

I ran into this issue this past week. I had 10 Magnacut blades and 2 AEB-L blades to heat treat and plate quench and a set of 4" x 18" x 1" aluminum plates. I did 2 blades at a time, so I would put 2 blades in, rebound, soak, quench in plates for 2 minutes or so (I just stood on the plates)...

What's going on in your shop?

Its only around $3 more per foot than other cpm stainless steels like CPM154 and the same price as S35VN. CPM 20CV and S90V are both more expensive. Nitro V and AEBL are like half the price for a 4' bar vs the 3' bars of the CPM stuff. I got 10 smaller blades (around 7" ish ) out of my 6' of...

What's going on in your shop?

The one with the orange pins is a 3/32" thick, 62 HRC Nitro V blade, 3" cutting edge (not including the finger choil), 8" or so overall with a phenolic burl handle from Current Composite and orange pins. Current got the blade this week for pictures for their website, so you may see it there...

What's going on in your shop?

And more shop time! Funky Orange/Green fabric handles for a Nitro V paring knife, Oyster knife (premade blank on the Oyster knife), and CPM154 fillet knife. Black micarta for a Magnacut FBBO reverse tanto and Orange Amerigrip on a Magnacut Hunter/EDC.

    HT oven build!

Got the DPST re wired, but the light still doesn't turn on. I will put it on the positive leg of the SSR next time and see if that makes a difference instead of being on the negative leg, or run the contacts on the negative side of the switch? I did another run last night to 1530 in around...

    HT oven build!

Got the new element and tubes installed and sealed the door better with a rope gasket; I had a 1/8"+ gap between the door and the body firebricks. Took 2.5 hrs to get to 1900 on 240v (same as the first run with the gap in the door!), so something isn't wired correctly somewhere! Going to...

    Out source for heat treatment

I paid around $282 for 43 blades, mixed steel, and some longer blades, in my last batch from Bos.

    HT oven build!

I saw Jarod Todd's build on BFC.com; he used the coil over tube method and loved it. It keeps the walls full thickness for better insulation and he found it made it more even temperature wise. A few other guys have done them this way and liked them over the coils in the walls. Coil in the...

    HT oven build!

Decided to build up a heat treat oven during my vacation! Chamber is 27" long, 7" wide and 6.5" tall and I used coil over quartz tubes across the top of the kiln like a few others have done. Auber Ramp/Soak/Wifi PID, dual SSR and heat sinks, 240v and a 3840 watt, 16amp element in 13 AWG...

    Out source for heat treatment

I use Bos Heat Treat. Others use Peters, especially if they have a batch to do of the same steel. Jarod Todd does heat treating again, but just does a snap temper and you can temper fully when you get them back.
