    welding a stick tang HELP

It has to be done right, no short cuts. I've done quite a few damascus pieces if the tang couldn't be drawn far enough with out making it too thin. Making big knives especially, its nice to make the tang of one continuous piece.

    welding a stick tang HELP

So much depends on the joint you make, mortise and tenon or ship lap, which I like. A good clean joint and a tig welder work wonders. No gaps in the joint whatsoever. Fred

    Pro-Cut/Craftsman wet grinder build.

Hi Clint, The flow is really low on the fan pattern mist. I've been using the same 5 gallons for a couple of weeks and its used little of the liquid. I run the same misting system on the Bridgeport, now it eats the Kool Mist. I can run 5 gallons in an after noon run on the big mill...

    Tapmatic

I run a 30x tapping 1/4 x 20 threads; I've found that some tapes work much better than others. I run a hundred holes at a time on 01 I use two taps each one cutting 50 units. Its cheap to do this considering that if I screw up one hole it cost me 8 dollars.

    Back in the saddle?

Hi Raymond, good to see you Sir. The golden years; getting up in the morning waiting to see if another body part falls off that day. :what!: You just need to down shift a couple of gears and keep on trucking. I start at 10 AM instead of 7 like I did for 40 years. Regards, Fred

    Your input on disk grinders?

I have owned both vertical and horizontal disc machines. To me, the horizontal has more uses. Variable speed, you'll find, is a huge asset. The Neilson disc are worth the money. Happy grinding, Fred

    Pro-Cut/Craftsman wet grinder build.

We switched to the water based coolant because of this issue. Having a film of oil on everything in the shop isn't pleasant to work around. The Kool-mist, being a water based product is less offensive to work with but I still had to install "wipers" along the belt to suppress the airborn mist...

    Pro-Cut/Craftsman wet grinder build.

Thank you! The mister was purchased from Victor Machine out of NY and operates using a vacuum hose, which goes in the 5 gallons of Kool Mist machining coolant, the other hose runs to the air compressor and has a solenoid valve in the line so the system can be turned off and on with a switch @...

    Pro-Cut/Craftsman wet grinder build.

Brad, I love to recycle equipment and besides my cash cow is dead and its a necessity. Working with mister is a little different but it doesn't take long to get used to. Its nice not having to pull the blade from the surface of the belt to cool it and therefor there is no need to...

    Pro-Cut/Craftsman wet grinder build.

There has been a lot of discussion about the advantages of grinding edges "Wet" as well as grinding bevels after heat treat. I've gotten into making some kitchen knives, that are on the thin side and therefor require grinding after heat treating. I've had both of these grinders pictured in the...

What's going on in your shop?

Hi John, These are done as you explain your technique, with the metal plate up against the filed shoulders. This allows for an sylightly oversize hole that is then filled with epoxy during assembly. These handles have 10 separate pieces which are pinned; using epoxy makes assemble...

    hamon question ?

Hamons don't like heat. Hamon's don't like to be buffed, Hamons like steel to be polished to at least 800 grit. Hamon's like "short" dips in feric Chloride followed by polishing with Flitz or Simachrome. Hamons can be made using several different materials. W2 and 1095 are two of the best hamon...

    Mushroom hunters knife in W2.

This little counter knife was made specifically to slice delicate mushrooms. The steel is W2 the blade is 5 inches long, it measures .086 at the spine handle junction and is truly scary sharp. It carries a 22 degree inclusive "flat" edge.

    An attempt at a Hamon

I use mostly W2 for the kitchenware I make. I started using Brownell's PBC anti scale compound, instead of clay about a year ago. I find it easier to control the pattern and the results are decent. The blade is heated to 200fh before the liquid is applied. I quench using Parks 50 @ room temp.

What are the best grinders that a man who wants to one day be a pro buy

A one HP belt machine does not have enough torque to run modern ceramic belts. These belts are designed to be used at high SFM and high pressures. If they are run without sufficient belt speed and pressure they will load up and glaze. This shortens there useful life considerably. The OP stated...
