How fast did you get it from the kiln to your quenchant? You've got about a second to get it there and you have to be careful when using the kiln because cold tongs will suck the heat out of the blade.

mark your center line and and grind to the spine. Done. :D

Finished this one up for a customer the other day. He wanted something similar to the "Pointy Flipper" (I know; creative name :D ), but with a bit of recurve. Has about a 3 1/2-inch cutting edge and a copper backspacer. (sorry for the bad photos!)

Also; if you don't have a scotchbrite wheel, buy one. They are priceless for cleaning up sharp edges. :)

Looks good! Once you get them all figured out, a nice acccessory for down the road would be a hinged bottom plate so you could turn it into a horizontal when needed. ;)

Cross section does play a big part -- you can get a beautiful hamon in a full flat-ground blade with a full quench. :)

I have the horizontal grinder in 48, but would like to change it to 72 when I get a chance (and more room). Great machine and having it VS is invaluable for smooth curves. I had some special 5/32 "wheels" done so I can crawl the machine and clean up the stop pin area on my folder blades. :)

Another thumbs up for Solid State. The 120V 1 HP versions are great for disc grinders and horizontals.

Take some lexan or thicker plexi and heat it up with your heat gun - once it is malleable, hold it up against your wheel until it cools. I have a couple of these that I put 3-ounce leather over and they work great for handrubbin'.
