Thanks Laurence. I probably would have opted for the Grizzly. My drill press is a Grizzly 12 speed. Very nice unit! Tony

    Band saw needs

When I said "sawing logs" I meant logs like firewood. I want to cut slabs for my knife scales. I will likely buy knife "kits", and I realize they are hardened, I will drill and polish as called for and use the slabs I cut from firewood for the scales. It will be awhile until I get to the point...

From the reply's, I don't need the Grizzly's slow speeds of 140 rpm. So any drill press will work with a speed over 2500+-. Thanks for the reply's. I'll spend the $$$$$ saved on carbide bits. Tony

    Band saw needs

Hello all, I am just gathering my tools. I have a belt sander and have settled on a drill press. I have researched band saws, and because I have never used one, I'm not sure what I really NEED. I have access to hard wood logs so I will re-saw the logs for my scales. I will also use it for...

Ed, OK, so for my needs (drilling hardened existing or new holes), run the drill press 2500 rpm+ with cutting oil. What type of pressure? Heavy/pulsed or slow? I remember reading a post of yours on the "drill doctor". I will look into one. Thanks

Thanks Joe. I was leaning that way even though the Grizzly is more expensive. I have been watching craigslist, and have yet to see a Grizzly anything for sale.

    Drilling hardened steel revisited

Hello, I posted here almost 2 years ago as I anticipated making my own knives. Well, it didn't happen as things changed (wifes job went to mexico). So, I'm trying again. I have searched here, google and I have found conflicting answers. I have a belt sander/grinder that will work for now...

Rayban, Thanks for the reply. I don't have a bandsaw, but a hacksaw should work. The reply's I have read here should allow me to figure this out. Tony

JD, That sounds easy. It just so happens, I have an old cutting board in the garage. Thanks for the advise! Tony

I have been reading all I can here and researching the tools I may need. I have 4 knives I want to "rebuild". Two are kitchen and 2 are hunting/skinners. This may be a dumb question, but what is the easiest way to remove the old scales? I could grind them off but that seems really dusty. I could...
