Do you harden guards? Has anyone kept tarnish off of polished brass with clear laquer

ED, thanks again for coming through for me. I'm making an original wall hanger Bowie knife design for my brother with stainless guard and bolsters (full tang) with a lot of fancy file work on it and didn't want to screw it up by hardening it unless I had to. My brother really liked the file work...

Do you harden guards? Has anyone kept tarnish off of polished brass with clear laquer

How's it going knife dogs? I have a couple of questions that you could help me with concerning guards. 1. I have always used Brass to make my guards, pommels and bolsters with. I am thinking of using stainless steel to make an open slot guard with the open part of the guard extending above the...

What type of Brass and Stainless Steel to use for guards and pommels

Guys thanks for your help. I realize now after reading your answers that I did indeed burn the bronze by trying to take out a deep scratch with the buffer instead of going back to the sandpaper first. It was just one scratch while the rest of the guard looked beautiful; I was too lazy and...

What type of Brass and Stainless Steel to use for guards and pommels

Hey knife dogs, While looking through a metal vendor's web page I noticed that he offered several types of Brass that he sells. Can you guys tell me which type of Brass is the best to use for guards and pommels? One of the Brass types that I used for a couple of knifes I made got orange peel...

What type of table saw blade to use to cut scales out of raw lumber?

Thanks for the info guys. I depended on my daddy's expertise with saws, planers, jointers, drill presses, routers, etc. (all of his equipment were production grade that he bought used from a furniture factory), that I became complacent and would just plug his equipment in and not learn how to...

What type of table saw blade to use to cut scales out of raw lumber?

Hello fellow knife dogs! I need some help. I just bought a table saw and want to cut scales out of Cocobolo and other exotic hardwood lumber. I use to work with my Dad building things around the house with his table saw but Dad has since passed away and he is the one who had the knowledge of...

    What's ahead of you....

Smithy, I am so sorry to hear about your lung cancer. I know what you are and will go through for my Dad died from it. Be sure to ask your Doctor what type of lung cancer you have. My Dad's doctor was not completely honest with him and our family. Dad was diagnosed with "small oats" cancer. The...

    My new oven!

The literature and Evenheat Rep. says to use a 240V/20A, NEMA 6-R plug and outlet configuration. It's easy to change out yourself, but I would get an electrician if you have no experience working with electrical wiring. NEMA 6-R is the designation for how the prongs are arranged on the power...

What is the ideal size of wheel for hollow grinding?

Thanks a lot knife dogs. I guess I will stay with the 14 inch and learn to use it properly. After reading Ed's comment I now understand that I am probably trying to get an exaggerated hollow grind. Hollow grinding is new to me and I need a lot of practice! Grizzly Bear

What is the ideal size of wheel for hollow grinding?

I just bought a new grinder with a 14 inch wheel on it to do hollow grinding. I am running into trouble because I can't see the hollow grind in the blade. The wheel is so large it doesn't seem to make a scoop in the blade. What size wheel do you guys suggest using to get good hollow grinds...

Wood or Plexiglass for knife patterns

Hey Knife Dogs, I have another question I need advice on. Is it better to make permanent knife patterns out of thin wood or Plexiglas? I have seen both but was concerned that cutting the Plexiglas would gum up my band saw blade. If I use Plexiglas, what type of blade should I use - a metal...

    steel from hardware store

Hey Knife Dogs, I know that the steel from the hardware store is not useful for knife making, it is used for welding (mild steel?) I want to use some for practice. I was wondering if this steel has been hardened or is it very soft and easy to work with? How does it compare to unhardened 440C...

    Question about walnut handle

Ed, will Tung oil be just as good as Tru-oil? I don't know if there is much difference in them but since you recommend tru-oil I was wondering if you thought Tung-oil would work just as good. I routinely use Tung-oil but if Tru-oil is better, I will switch over. Thanks for the info. Grizzly
