First forge questions

I'm about to make my first forge and this is what I have come up with. I work at a plumbing HVAC company so I have found a few things in the scrap pile over the years. This time it was a small expansion tank for an Ro system. It's about 14"tall and maybe 8" or so diameter, not to big but big enough I figure for a small knife forge I can tuck away in the shed while not using it. I have built a frosty tee burner, not tested yet. I have coming in the mail the high temp fiber white insulation and a 30psi gas hose/reg. I'll need to get some refactoring sealer as well.

My big question is will a pizza stone type material work to put in the forge so I can put the knives on it? I need a brick that will be thin because of the size of the tank I'm using? Need some ideas

I seriously doubt a pizza stone will work. Remember the forge will be well above 2,000°F, I suspect the pizza stone will break - won't hurt anything, just remove the broken pieces.

What type of forge burner are you planning - venturi or forced air? I've used both types and MUCH prefer the forced air. Wait, you've built the frosty tee burner - that's a venturi type burner. Remember testing the burner will give different results outside the forge without the backpressure of being inside the forge. Keep us updated with your results, and post some photos of your progress.

I didn't think it would work. I just was thinking thin, easy to find and cheaper side. I think if I put a brick of some sort, it will take up so much room.

The burner isn't tested yet it is just a tee with it tapped and mig tip is in place. It will just be atmosphere burner. It's the 1x1x3/4 tee. I work at a HVAC plumbing company so I tried to keep it as much, I can get it at work, build. I will keep you posted

What part of the world are you in? You can see where I am in my profile - if you're anywhere close I might have a spare venturi burner laying around - at least I've got a bell type tee that's good to use for the burner. I know I've got a spare forced air burner I used on an old forge.

A 30# propane tank makes a good forge - usually the local propane company has several old decommissioned tanks (20 mostly which will work) just laying around to give away to make a forge from. That's what I used.
