Air compressor help

I don't recall seeing this build up of residue when I first got my compressor. Now I get this residue with the consistency of talcum powder when I empty the tank. I empty the tank after each session.
Is this normal? I'm suspecting it isn't. Do I need to put the compressor in a cleaner environment and run a longer hose?
Thanks for any input

Well, I'll add if it doesn't make more and more every time you drain it, I wouldn't worry about it. If it increases, there might be an issue.

I would expect to see some condensation, though not much in your location. How frequently have you been seeing this powder - is it a new compressor? Does the stuff coming out of the tank melt when heated (possibly a fiber seal material of some sort?) And, why drain the tank so often, it shouldn't be necessary.

On a serious note, it may be soda blast or scale from welding, I don't think those tanks are painted on the inside or lined like a water heater.
Good thought. I don't think any of my compressors are painted on the inside. I know none of my big compressors are.

It's fairly new. I've had it about four months and it didn't get a lot of use at first. Now I use it all the time. I'll test some of the residue next time with a torch and see what I get.

As far as draining the tank daily, that's per the manual.

You ever figure out what that stuff coming out of your compressor is?

No. It's been working OK. I'm thinking the filters that are on the unit aren't fine enough for some of the stuff that gets into it. I'm setting up a box fan with some filters on it to the filter the air and see if that helps. Other than that, I really have no idea. I'll just keep monitoring it and see how it goes.

Gotcha. If you unscrew a port on the reciever tank, you can wash it out with a garden hose. I've done that to all of my big compressors. Unless you can actually see the dust in the air the whole time your pump is running, I don't think that'd be the issue. Not saying you shouldn't try to clean the air up in the shop - that's always a good thing. Either something weird in the tank left over from manufacturing, a result of the pump breaking in (rings wearing it, etc), or a cartel got sloppy and left some... product... in the tank.

Thanks for the tip on washing out with a garden hose. I'll give that a try.

I'm starting to lean towards the cartel story. It's the most interesting explanation at any rate.
