Musk Ox Horn

I have a steak knife order and the client would like to use musk ox horn as the accent between bolster and scale. Not a big deal but I'm unsure of using musk ox in a food type of environment. Mainly for the stains it might get. I seal it with CA so that should give it some protection.

Don't know if you've looked for, or used any Musk Ox lately, but it's pretty difficult to come buy, and VERY pricey.

It's typical of any type of horn.... it's compressed hair. Anything that can happen to your wife or girlfriend during a "bad hair day" can happen to it. There's not much "sealing" to it...meaning it really doesn't matter what you do, you can't ever fully seal it. I'd say just let it be what it is, fine finish it, light buff, and a good coat of paste wax.

Thanks Ed. I have some leftover from Mark K. I only use it for accents.

As for the sealing, that's kinda what I thought would be the case. As cool as it is, I can see someone cutting into their steak and grease soaking in and staining it. I'll tell the client and let them make the choice.

She's also considering mammoth molar but I told her I'd check on the musk ox

Steer here towards the Musk Ox versus the molar! For being fossilized, mammoth molar is super fragile.... I've used it exactly 3 times....and all three times the knife it was on came back for chips/breaking issue..... won't use it again.

Yeah, that's always been my concern with mammoth. I generally don't recommend it for anything other than display pieces.

These pieces would only be 1/8 to 1/4" wide and sandwiched between the scale and the bolster. It would be hard to chip and I will let her know that is a possibility. Always set expectations!

It's my lot in life Ted. Make people smile. It's so much easier and more satisfying than complaining and bitchin about how crappy things are. Hell, I haven't said a word about Biden. ( I'm just bidin my time till it's appropriate !)
I bet you're a hoot on a fishing boat aren't you?!
