Thought I would go ahead and make a thread for this one so I could spam a few more pictures than I wanted to in what’s going on in your shop since you guys really gave me some great advice on handle contouring. Still has issues but my cleanest so far I believe. Plenty to improve on though.

Number 7 for me.

4” blade
4 3/4” handle
Ironwood
80crv2
600 satin
Brass pins

terrible pictures because we had bad weather and it had to leave the shop today the first picture particularly is terrible but it’s just a weird shadow the finish is clean. 3C38FB13-236F-49FC-8D06-BF0EA2016513.jpegE073B510-8BDC-4AA6-8E24-107DC9A988AD.jpeg2990C42F-B38C-41A0-80BD-025902893BEE.jpeg65481024-F83C-4460-A3D0-C6A41214836E.jpeg3B34D57F-FBD7-4276-BD5C-447D29877777.jpegC7EA5514-14B2-4185-8079-74EFB56394B5.jpeg236EF349-40F1-43C0-8A7D-4AA258A1CB83.jpeg0B0716BE-ACA4-4249-85D8-0B4F3FBAB1A7.jpeg

so I'm going to point out something that I often have issues with as well. I can NEVER get my plunge lines to be the same ... no matter how I try. Yours are super close but I have that same issue. I'm guessing you don't have a file guide ... like I don't. Really nice knife ... I don't mean any disrespect by the comment.

None taken! I completely agree definitely need to improve on that. I do have a file guide but I never use it. The main problem is my belt doesn’t like to track very well off the left side of my Platen so I can’t clean them up the same. It’s an issue I need to work on before I finish my next ones. And I just need to be more careful establishing them in the first place. Thank you for pointing it out. Only way to improve!

Daniel and Diverdan : here's a file guide i made from scrap . Piece of mystery steel bar stock, coupla 1/4 20 cap screws and you're off to the races. to make it last a little longer, I use a safe edge file (no teeth on the safe edge.)
BTW, Daniel...nice knife.DSC01689.JPGDSC01690.JPGDSC01691.JPG

An OBM grinder, perhaps??? That's my main complaint about that design. A work around (if you have a carbide file guide) is to do the plunges with a small chainsaw file, get them where you want them and then use the 2x72 to get the rest of the blade and clean up with hand sanding.

Mine is an OBM platen, and that's the problem I had as well. My fix was to remove some metal on the brackets to gain more space so it wouldn't interfere with my file guide.

Very nice knife Daniel. Love that Ironwood!

That looks awesome! That ironwood!

Plunges are always a challenge, doesn't matter how long you've been doing it.

If it's bugging you, you might be able to "cheat" on that by putting a choil at that spot. The curve in the choil may take it up high enough where the plunges are even. A dremel with a cylindrical stone would get it done pretty quickly. Just be sure to tape everything up really really good and don't overheat. Not trying to encourage "cheating" or anything, just a fix that avoids hurting that nice knife! Personally I don't think you need to bother.

Hi, jumping in a little late on this thread but WTH. I work in ironwood too, totally love it, but it’s got the same problem of most woods, it browns down. Can’t tell if this is oxidation or UV exposure but it surely does happen. Have you (ya'll) found anything to block this darkening down on ironwood? I’m generally using a walnut oil finish 'cause I’m doing a lot of kitchen stuff. Thanks.
