Anybody have any ideas on a compact way to store and organize 2x72 belts. Im tired of going thru my 3 large hooks for various belts for the grinder! Thanks for any help!
 
Yup. Disperse them throughout your shop by hanging them on any appendage that may be present on shelves, racks, or better yet, other tools. The important thing to remember is keeping them evenly dispersed, so you don't have to move too many belts when you need to use something else.
 
I was looking into using plastic containers to store each grit, and then use the hooks just for the ones I'm currently using. Haven't found containers that work yet.
 
Get you a board (maybe 1x4) about four or five feet long. Get some wooden dowels cut it in as many pieces as you wish maybe four inches long. Drill holes in the board glue in the wooden pegs and voila. I have mine organized by grit from left to right in increasing grit. A peg for every grit you stock. On the lighter weight belts a counter weight hung from the bottom of the belts helps tremendously with preventing the curling mess we all see.
 
I've gone to just using the boxes they were shipped in for my unused belts, keeping them curled up and just pulling the one I need out at a time. I only hang my used (or in-use) belts on hooks .

I have mine on dowels glued into boards like Chris Railey, but man...I've found over time their starting to be found hanging in different places. kind of like 'well these two hanging over there are used up pretty good, and those three hanging over in the corner are just about shot but might have 1/4 mile left in them, and those ones way over there should be trashed but I could still use them on mower blades. I'll tell you, for some reason I find it hard to say...OK, this friggin thing is shot and it's going in the can right now.
 
I bought two packs of plastic bowls at the dollar store and screwed a bunch of them to an overhead beam ( fender washers and short deck screws in bowl's center) gets them up outta the way.

I have 10 ft ceilings so I can still work under them. If I had lower ceilings I would use pairs of bowls to hold them horizontal.

I have a broom handle with a cheap sheet metal shelf bracket (with the tip bent) hose clamped to it for putting belts up or removing.
 
I was sitting at my bench looking at the problem and BAM!! I spy an old vinyl covered wardrobe that was full of JUNK! So I emptied all of the junk out of it put a 2x3 with a bunch of hooks on it I had (modified the hooks to work for my needs) in a bin. And a 11/2 hrs problem solved. Still sorting belts. Cool thing is I can zip up the outside and keep most of the crud off of the belts. Maybe put a dehumidifier pack in there to keep them from getting damp?

That's a nice setup. Keeping the belts clean from other dust is a good idea; especially the finer grit ones. All of my belts are out in the open. I'm still trying to figure out how to fix that. I don't have the room for a covered wardrobe or similar.
