New project, old wood

Heikki

KNIFE MAKER
The 125 year old barn finally came down on the family farm in Upper Michigan. I was given some of the wood and decided to make some kitchen knife blocks for all my cousins. The idea is to fill them with bamboo skewers to hold the knives in place. I think it’s a neat way for everyone to have a piece of the old homestead. I was also considering having some of it stabilized to see if I can make handles with it. In my head I'm picturing the texture kind of like antler, but I think I'm probably wrong on that count. We'll see.

I found a restaurant supply place online. I have 4500 skewers heading my way. Hopefully that will be enough.

I love that idea.

I like the concept. The only concern I have is if folks aren't careful with how/where they insert the blade there's a possibility of ruining the edge by hitting a blade already in the block. Perhaps providing some sort of separation walls that could be moved around to prevent this?

Also, I'd probably round down the tips of the skewers a bit to prevent stabbing fingers when not paying attention.

Got a prototype done. I will probably put the skewers in point down, as I've already poked myself. It took 1400 to fill the box. Also may need to rethink some of the design. I made it to accept 8-9" blades, using 10" skewers, which makes it kinda tall if you have to put it on a countertop under cabinets.

Sooo...if a fella soaked them skewers right proper with some mineral oil, that would be a good or bad thing?
