Canister Damascus WIP

Figured I might as well document this a little bit. First time trying canister Damascus. Buddy gave me some scraps of Damascus so I figured I would throw them in the can and see what happened. Ha ha. Using thin wall 1 1/4 can 6” long. 1080 Powder with 4% nickel. I’m using white out in the cans I don’t know if that’s the way to do it some people say it’s the way to go and some people say there’s a lot better ways so we shall see. More to come later. 49FA85A2-4BF9-423A-8BCD-511A2F2A9282.jpeg

Yes sir all the Damascus pieces were ground completely clean just thought it made for a better picture with the pattern showing. Thanks for the tip on the lid I would’ve forgotten to do that!

Well I tried and failed. I think the issue was lack of compression. I lost my handle on both billets a few heats in so I wasn’t able to work it down as much as I wanted before it came out of the can. All well. We’ll do better on the next ones. E86BEF8A-0134-42CF-A1F2-EEC7558029A6.jpegD4BE7E0A-81B4-41F5-9C85-4C3658CD545F.jpegD574E4CE-BC08-4C06-96B7-B512A83044CC.jpeg

Good try and thanks for the WIP showing results. You using a press or hammer for setting the weld? I'm wanting to try a canister, but only have a hammer, no press.

Just a hammer. Every time I get money to build the press something comes up.

Good effort! It's a long shot to get canister welding to work with a hand hammer (I'm assuming that what you meant when you said "Just a hammer."? Not saying it can't be done, but it's tough, and requires a lot of luck.

Thank you. I knew it was a longshot but I do love to play around with forge welding!

best advice for doing a canister i can give you is to wait until you get a press.
compressing the powder with just hand hammer blows is not going to do it.
There are a million other ways you can make damascus with a hand hammer, concentrate on those..
