Dion Damascus DAM100

I went to a friend's forge today to forge out my piece of Dion Damascus DAM100. Very nice stuff in my opinion reasonable too. Here is a picture of the rough forged blade with a quick 40G belt and a 2 minute etch. Lots of work still to do but this one should be a winner!!

Looks good. I haven’t tried mine yet but that pattern and etch is encouraging.

Well after I talked to you I figured it was worth a shot. Real nice stuff it seems? Of course won't know for sure till HT and final sharpening. I wish I could get it in 1/4" it would have been good for Raindrop or Ladder. At 3/16" it might be a little tight. Unless I cut and forge welded it? But I didn't really want to get into that! Still unproven but my results so far are very hopeful! The pic does not do the pattern justice!

What did you have to do to the billet? I mean the pattern is very cool , but when I looked at the website pictures , all I saw was simple line pattern.

When you get the Billet it looks like a silver bar with little to no pattern. It has to be either forged out or ground. As you forge or grind the layers are revealed. I thought the same thing. As soon as we cooled it enough after forging went to the grinder and etch! This pic is right out of the etch. I'm pretty sure they manufacture this using a rolling mill, that's why the billet is so consistent.

The post I made with the messed up raindrop pattern was the same billet you are working. If you try it think shallow on the holes for sure.

I’m thinking that forging will bring out more of the pattern than stock removal. I’ll know soon enough.

I agree with that. Where I forged in the bevels the pattern is really tight. Not knowing how good or bad this blank was I was very conservative with the forging. You can forge the bevels up higher and forge more distal taper in if you want Opaul. I think the pattern would be even better?

I'd prefer that you do a stock removal, so I can see the results. (Yeah , I know....selfish of me , but I am cheap too.)
Bruce I posted one last week or so that was straight stock removal. Very straight thick line pattern.7560AABE-A4AF-4BC3-8EB4-0B9D0EA2FD37.jpeg800EABD5-FC7F-4F95-8DCC-2C9DF93D14B6.jpeg
This was forged down to a failed raindrop pattern. Both started as a 1.5 inch wide 3/16” thich Dion Damascus billet.2F723E46-A863-4760-920B-E29B7D8D3D28.jpeg

I forged one down to about 1/8 inch today, plus I used my flypress on it too. Billet held up fine even under my fly press. I will try to get the knife through HT tomorrow so you can see the pattern.
