Wild Plum Knife Scales

This is my latest set of scales that I made. I put them on a 1084 chefs knife and my small personal carry. The small knife is 1084 and 15N20. I Make the handle material with shavings from the wood. Make sure you zoom in on the handle pictures!

Very nice! I'm not sure I've ever seen that handle material before but it sure looks good. Both knives look great!

That plum is spectacular! I see you make it from shavings- how does the wood look in block form? Nice knives, too!

I actually age the logs for at least a year, outside and covered. So the shavings come when I am chainsawing the logs into blocks that I cut into scales. This go around, I cut pecan, walnut, cedar and the wild plum.

Wait, you made those scales out of chips???? Did you just mix it up and cast it in resin? Would you give a brief rundown of how you did that if you do not mind. We generate piles of that stuff with the sawmill. I am all about no waste...Goes without saying but great knife.

Shoot, after seeing those handles I’m about to rent a wood chipper and use up all the scraps from my handle trimmings!

Haha! I am still working out my process, I am getting alot of air bubbles in the casting. This all started after I stabilized some OSB plywood and put it on a knife, I have been experimenting with different size chips, resins and epoxy .
This is the OSB handle.

If you are getting bubbles and you have a degasser or stabilizing chamber maybe try pouring your casting and let it cure under vacuum in the chamber, that should, in my limited understanding, solve the air bubbles problem. I also have thought about using long cure epoxy and degassing it before I pour the casting but I think that would not work well as you would get air into the mix by pouring.

Yep, I need a bigger vacuum chamber, just googled it a few minutes ago.
I don't think you will get a good look with saw dust. Do you guys run a chipper at the saw mill?

No but we run chainsaws and if that is better that is what I will try. I do have access to a chipper though, so maybe I can use that for some of the smaller walnut branches I am always trying to figure out what to do with. I just have this vision of walnut chips and maple chips mixed and cast like you did above.

Hmmm. I have not tried a horse turd but I am going to try and stabilize a cigar!
