What would you do

Von Gruff

KNIFE MAKER
I made a mistake when I was drilling the handle pin holes on this knife. I have two sets of holes in the pattern with one set for when there is a bolster and handle and another set for when there is just the handle so I can do either depending on the order. After getting the buffalo horn bolsters pinned and epoxied into place I fitted the beech burl handles and drilled the front hole where the middle pin would go if there were no bolsters fitted. To me it looks so bad that I dont want to ship it but I only have one set of the beech burl left. So would you you destroy the handle and replace it or sell the knife as a second knowing there would be a knife out there that you were embarrassed about even though it will work as well as any other knife you make.

I would shave some of the handle down above the last pin and reshape it a bit. It will still look awesome.

I don't know Garry, I'm kind on the fence with that one but looking at it and thinking about it here's what I would do,
I would take 1/16" pins and following the curve of the bolster about a 1/4" back or what ever you think would look good...
I'd put a pin in line with both the pins in the bolster and one between those two.
In the process of doing that you'd be adding a little bling with the added pins while making the two other pins look like that's where they were meant to be.
Of course you can't go thru the tang but it wouldn't matter, their just for looks.
or maybe have them come back in a horizontal V pattern.

If you're not happy now, you never will be.

Regret stings a lot longer than losing scales does.

I know what I'd do.....heck.....I've already done it.
That is what I have already decided John and have the other set of scales on the bench to replace with correct pin spacing. And yes I have done it before but it was the type of scales on this one that begged the question.

I had though of adding something to the front end of the handle but thought it would start to look a bit crowded

Could you redrill 3/16 holes over those pins in opposite directions . Would then the 3/16 in pins line up? Just a thought.

I agree totally with that sentiment, after all, the only one that you have to please is yourself and you will always know that it wasn't up to your standards.
