Finally got my laser cut of Elamx and Vanax done, around 150 blanks. Just need to pop to Sheffield to get them heat treat in bulk. Then the fun begins grinding them out.

Good grief that’s a lot of blades!!

Indeed but it has taken me a few years to be able to save the cash to do this as took a few sheets of metal, one quite large , hence a lot of money in one go plus the laser and heat treat costs. But the upside is I have enough steel which will be of a consistent/perfect quality for a few years or so. A pal of mine has done this for several years now and in the long run it definitely pays to do it.

To be honest although it cost me a kings ransom as Elmax steel, if you can do this with cheaper steels it is a great option and saves time on grinding.
Obviously it will only work with sheet. The only thing is if you choose to do the heat treat in the initial stages you will need to use ceramic belts.

I was asked to make a Knife for one of the Uk reps so he got me a sheet. Though I think it is available in the UK direct from the mill in Sweden.

I should have noticed you said Sheffield — in the UK. That makes sense now since I believe I bought the only sheet of Vanax that was in the US and that took three months to pry it out of their hands. I haven’t even tried it yet myself but the specs are amazing.

you are certainly going to know what you will do each week for some time to come

I haven't actually tried Vanax yet but I here great stuff about it. I believe the US SEALs have now trialled it and might be using it for their knives?....If they will be using it then it must have had a hell of a brutal set of tests!

The good thing for me is Elmax can be put into the same HT oven (1080c I think) and then the same Cryo soak. The only difference is the temper as the Elmax will be 500c and the Vanax 200c or it won't achieve corrosion resistance I am told.....which it its forte after all.

And yes UK ))
