Some of my beginning attempts at file work

KNIFE MAKER
Just disastrous... but better than previous attempts. I am absolutely fascinated by this stuff. When I look at y’alls knives that have it, I’m in awe. So much detail and so clean. I’m totally addicted to the pursuit of that skill.

Edit 1: I’m not done with either of these.

Thanks, brother! My skills are nowhere in the ballpark of being able to do this effectively, but right now my knives are free... some come with botched file work, some do not lol. I just absolutely love trying it haha. It’s actually one of my favorite parts.
 
I'm not sure of the pattern in your picture. I take it the file work is done pre-heat treat. After heat treat and during the clean up it will polish out much nicer. It is a pretty good attempt. Do not sell yourself short, very good effort.

.Did you free hand file it? Use a file jig?

Whenever, I do rope file work, I try to use a jig. I made one, and now I cannot find it. I will need to make another.

Thank you very much! I do Mostly freehand but I do use a vice and sometimes a makeshift guide.
 
Hey if it was easy everyone would be doing it and there are some good books on this stuff check them out.Also checkout that one section here were they show file work a guy has a tutorial on the vine work.

I’ve tried some file work. Not an easy thing. Looks to me like you have a steady hand and have done a great job.
