questions about the atlanta knife show

KNIFE MAKER
Some questions about showing at the Atlanta show:

Do guys ever split the costs of the booth?(permissible?)

Can you set-up your own booth or do you have to pay union riggers?

What is the cost of the smallest booth?

Are there restrictions on # of lights/power/display materials?

Has anyone here showed there before?

Thanks!

I've been doing the Blade Show for over 20 years now.... in fact, this coming year it's the only show I'm planning to do. Unless you're already on the waiting list, it's unlikely that you will get a table for the 2018 show. If you get your name on the waiting list, and can deal with a very last minute notification (like a few days before the show), you MIGHT be lucky and get a table if someone cancels... otherwise expect to wait for at least a couple of years to get a table/booth. There are always a few people every year that don't return, for one reason or another, and always some last minute cancellations due to various reasons, but for the most part if you get a table, it's because someone has retired from or quit knifemaking.

I go the "table" route, simply because I could never have enough product to justify a booth (either the size, or the cost). Booths are almost always a combination of several people/entities sharing. What I find amazing is the logistics of the booth holders...... most come with either a large cargo trailer, or a large rental "moving" truck, and some even hire locals to help them unload/setup a booth. If you tried to setup a booth with the furnishings they offer....you'd go broke.

Cost wise, for me, as a table holder, to get there, lodging, meals, do the show, and get home is about $3,500 average...... so in order for me to just break even, I need to sell $3,500 in product.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're a knifemaker, then the Blade Show is a MUST DO show. It's is not only the largest show, but is unique in that it draws makers, and buyers from all over the planet. It's the only show that I see patrons mapping out their routes/actions months ahead of time, and when the open the doors on Friday, it's like a stampede/feeding frenzy for about the first hour of the show.

Ted, I think section 4 of the contract in the first link spells it out pretty good, and seem to be reasonable. From what I've seen:

DISPLAY REGULATIONS/EXHIBIT SPACE No exhibit may block or interfere with a neighboring exhibit.

Exhibitors shall confine all exhibit activities within the limits of their own booths/tables.

All materials and activities in a booth shall be relevant to the exhibitor’s products and/or services. The level of sound production devices shall be kept low enough so as to not be objectionable to other exhibitors.

Absolutely no exhibits are permitted outside the contracted booth/table space in public areas of the convention center, contracted hotels or other spaces in the city without express written permission from Show Management.

Nothing may be tacked, nailed, screwed, or otherwise attached to the columns, walls, floors or furniture in the Event area. Decals or other stick-on display materials cannot be affixed to floors or walls. Violators will be responsible for removal of any stick-on materials and charged for cleaning. Any expense incurred in affixing items in a manner necessary or proper for the protection of the equipment or furniture will be borne by the Exhibitor

I just checked and the Renaissance hotel that's in same building as Blade is booked up with no rooms available. I made reservations for Sheraton Suites Galleria hotel that's just across street. Wife didn't want Sheraton last yr so we didn't go. This year she says take Sheraton - she wants to go to Blade! OK, whatever it takes to make wife happy :)

...you might have fun too....lol.

We decided against going to Atlanta 2018. While I'd love to go just to meet some of you guys face to face....business-wise it doesn't make much sense yet...

Ted, I have the advantage of being able to drive there in 5 hrs or so rather than having to fly across country. Even with driving it's still a $1,000 weekend for us..... maybe a tad more depending. That is just for looking, not counting what I allow wife to "talk me into buying" {g}

Same here, it was about a 5 hour for me and around a grand. I'll be going next year as a spectator again it was great, spent another grand on material. it seemed like anyone involved with selling knifemaking material was there....and you get to see first hand what your buying so less chance of disappointment with handle material or steel - Damascus.

Actually it was more than a grand....I bought a house on the way up there Ha ha. :)

Yeah, but think of how much money that house will SAVE YOU in travel expenses going to Blade each year! Heck, with gas at nearly $3, how can you NOT buy a house closer to Blade?! Less oil changes on the truck, less wear and tear... shoot... That house is already paying you back!

Actually the new place is about 2 hours west of I-10 in the panhandle, it will shave off about 1.5 hours of driving. I won't be living there for good for probably another three years when I retire. hopefully the new shop goes in next year!

Chattahoochee.....try spelling that out five time's real fast Ha, ha. I'm not looking forward to having to write that on all my mail and stuff.
So headed east on I-10 is about 1.5 hours to I-75 at lake city. from Tampa, I think Lake city is around 3 hours up I-75.
Or I can take back roads thru Georgia to Atlanta. I really am starting to take a disliking to the interstates in Fl. I-4 just got voted today as the deadliest highway in the U.S. and that was just between Tampa and Orlando.

Chattahoochee, FL is a good location, far enough inland so hurricane's won't be so bad, and well located. My wife's from Dothan, AL just to the NW of Chattahoochee. You'll be able to make Blade nicely there.

I love it up there, compared to where I live now it's like a different country.:)God's country.
