First bevel on new grinder

Ok I'm a total convert!! What a HUGE DIFFERANCE!! That doesn't even come close to describing my first experience on my new grinder!! The 2x72 is Awesome! If you have been on the fence but are really into this knife thing you NEED ONE!! Can you make quality knives filing and sanding absolutely! But the time this tool saves is out if bounds! I will admit I cheated and cut the initial bevels so I could get the plunge where I wanted it but then I just took the table off and freehanded the rest. I did mess up one of the plunges due to a tracking issue. But it was an awesome learning experience. Take a look tell me what you think. IMG_20170830_8635.jpg IMG_20170830_8635.jpg

Great job Gliden07. If you haven't already, you might want to check out EKIME knives (sorry if I already mentioned this) he has about 12 videos of making a knife. His grinding demonstrations and commentary are worth the time to sit through them several times.
Also Walter Sorrels latest video shows him grinding mircarta. It's interesting in the fact you can see your grind quality by looking at the layers of micarta being ground away.

I agree with you though, a 2x72 is a nice step up in beginning knife making.

opaul is right Ekim is great I love his videos and you knife looks a lot better than mine did congrats.

That's the good side!! Thought I posted both but apparently posted same pic 2 times! The other side is t to bad and I should be able to fix most when I finish sand by hand.

You might try to stop your grind line before the spine. Maybe stop about 1/4" before the spine and let the grind line follow the curve of the blade.
Just my 2 cents.

This is great advice. It takes a bit of practice to get the flats at the top of the bevels to be the same on both sides. That is where hand sanding is your best friend. With practice, and grinding to a layout line, you will get the knack of it pretty quickly.

I may have gotten a little carried away with the first Grind!! But I was stunned at the speed I shaped and cut the bevels in this new blade! I have to practice and I want to change some of the grinds I do. I've been doing all Flat bevels that extend to the spine. I plan on experimenting more with this as time goes. Winter and Christmas is on the way and I know a few things for Santa already!! LOL!!

cheap trick:

lay your entire blade flat on the platen if your grind goes to the spine. It will thin the whole knife a tiny bit, but you'll get your flat back at the top of the bevel.

There are times when this little dude will save your life... like when you need to press the whole blank up against the platen. Wouldn't a handle be handy? (get rid of the eye bolt)

opaul, not sure what you mean by "break the spine", but John's trick works like a champ to fix when the FFG got up into the spine some.

Hey KenH :)
That's a term I picked up from another site. Essentially its when (looking from the top)the grind line is visible cutting into the spine. But your are correct John's suggestion would eliminate that issue.

That was my understanding of "break the spine" also, when the FFG came up and "broke into the spine", and you're right, that's the purpose of doing the full tang flat to platen is to remove that "broke spine" and it works great.

John, I like that magnet - it looks better than the welding magnets I'm currently using. I just placed the order this morning and should be here today. BTW, when you wish to post a link to an item on Amazon, if you use only the "https://www.amazon.com/dp/item_number" so it looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I1TFCK it gives a nice short link. It also works for ebay.

Looking good!

kevin...you'll have about the same response Glidon07 did...lol. I don't know how I ever got by in a shop without a knife grinder...and not just for knives!

Thanks, Ken! That's a good thing to know on links. I appreciate it.

I used welding magnets at first, too. This one has a wider footprint and is easier to clean the grinding dust off of. I think you'll really like it.

I don't know how I ever got by in a shop without a knife grinder...and not just for knives!

Isn't that the truth! Opens up a whole new world for fabrication and even just general chores. Sharpening garden implements, shaping recoil pads (lots of gun work, actually). I go to my grinder so often that I can't imagine being without one.

Ordered that Magnet and a few other goodies. I have to go thru and mess with a tracking issue on the machine. Tracking seems good then it will wander to one side or the other.

What grinder did you get?
I got two magnets from home depot and use them all the time. They are made with a finger loop and are very handy.

I bought the Reeder Grinder. Very nice quality. I needd to set it up correctly. I was so excited I put it all together and didn't set the wheels up the way they should have been. I'm gonna take them off and do it the way they suggest!
