Hydra flipper first batch WIP

Hi,
i made the first Hydra proto about a year ago, since then i have made a second proto that i was very pleased with and now it's time to put them into production and start working on the first batch of orders, i will be uploading pics as i go, here are the first two weeks:

the frames and blade will be cut using wire EDM so first step is for the EDM guy to do his magic.

Nice!!! I love taking a look into someone's shop and seeing how they do things. You've gave me a couple ideas for things I could change when doing batch work, thanks. I do have a question about the edc wire cutting, does it harden the edges when it cuts? I had some laser cut and it hardened the edges and holes big time, just wondering if that's the same way.

I have also a question on EDM: have the pivot holes been cut by edm too? If that is the case do they need to be reamed afterward?

thanks, the EDM doesn't harden the blade at all, it also gives a very good edge finish (can be cleaned with a 320 grit paper) and the adge is exactly 90 degrees.

thank you, the holes are done using EDM aswell, i asked the same question about reaming, i did a batch of friction folders last month that i also had cut using EDM and i didn't ream the holes and they whare smooth as silk, on this batch i made a smaller hole and used a reamer as they are flippers, i will see if there is a difference

the frames are 5.7mm thick and need to be milled to 1.8mm

pivot rings






in my affort to work smarter i have ordered a hole drilling tamplated to be cut via EDM along with the other parts


i use the pivot bushing and a pin to position the frame on the tamplate, works like a charm




 


scales are fited


after making the back spacers i can finally assemble the knives for the first time, i love this step!
 
I'm really enjoying this WIP and I appreciate you taking us along for the ride! I love watching the different processes that other makers use to accomplish the varying tasks of knife making. The knives are looking great and I think your pivot rings from matching scale material are a fantastic detail. Very classy!

The knobs around the pivots are a touch of class! The knives came out amazing!
