Early this year I traded a custom chef knife of mine for a small Jet brand wood turning lathe.

I have been making wine stoppers & bottle openers using up some scrap size pieces of woods left over from knife handle wood.

There is African Black Ebony, The brown shortie is called Tambutie and the other shortie is Red Ash along with the two toned mystery wood of the remaining long one.

I put some cutoffs of my Rhino head pin in the end of each handle.

Turning is fun and relaxing sometimes. After I have eaten enough grinding dust "Even with my mask on" It quiet and soothing to go see how much wood I can destroy with chisels, gorges and sandpaper!

Mr. Mod, I didn't know where to post this? Please move, if there is a more appropriate sub-forum?

Nice stoppers Laurence
We have a small Jet wood lathe too. Very heavy duty and smooth running. We been wanting to try pen turning but haven't quite figured it all out yet. Kaye has several pen kits but we still need some tools like a mandrel, trimmer, vise, press and a few other things.

Bruce,
I got a pen mandrel in the trade too. I haven't made any yet. All you should need is the mandrel.
You have a drill press and a vise etc right? Didn't a buddy of yours make a pen with some scrap wood you gave him and post it on KDs? I am sure he can get you started.

I love making the bottle openers and wine stoppers. May be I will make a few Pens for Xmas time?

Laurence - Those are fantastic! Is the hardware from Woodcraft?

Frank,
I like the quality a little better from www.rockler.com All of this stuff is made overseas in the big C of course. The kits from woodcraft seemed a little cheesey.

I get the Chrome & Pewter bottle openers and I suggest that you only get the solid Stainless wine stoppers. The plated chrome can tarnish after it's been in a few bottles of dark red wine. Rockler also has the Mandels and all of the other hardware your heart desires!

I sell a few along side my knives and sometimes I just gift a good customer with one or both. Their faces really light up after a knife purchase or two when I ask them. Which one to you like? And then reply to them after they have chosen, Its your's! LOL.

People ready like seeing the same woods in a knife handle and a stopper or opener.
I have turned some stabilized scrap, you can do it, But it's hard on the chisels and sandpaper just like a stabilized handle wood.

Have fun and enjoy. My Lathe is quiet & relaxing after a day of listening to my hardcore grinder balls out eating steel.

Good for you!

I've been turning pens again after years of absence. I have given away at least a dozen recently and have a dozen more on hand.

I enjoy doing this a lot. It's nice to be able to create a thing of beauty in a few hours.

I use my metal lathe with a carbide tool.
