Disc grinder speed

Calvin's disc cutting jig reminded me to pass along this operating find - well at least for me. If you operate your disc at much less than 75% you will not get the same amount of work done (this makes sense) but you will also find your sand paper doesn't last near as long at a slower speed. Frank

Thanks Frank,
Do you use grease on your disk when grinding a blade to help keep it cool? I do and it really helps a lot although I need to use my rubber cleaner from time to time to clean the disk.

grease on disk? Calvin - would you care to provide more info?

Thanks for any info, Ken H>

The grease I use,I got from Sheffield Knifemakers supply. It's made for this purpose,I can't remember what it's called and I'm not at my shop right now. I'll try to remember to get the details tomorrow and post it here.
Ken,I see your in south Baldwin county Alabama, you need to come see me one day and I'll show you what I'm talking about. I'm in Pace Florida, maybe 50 mies from you.

Calvin years ago I used a grease type product on my 2 X 72. I believe it was on cork belts to stop them from getting plugged with grit. I may have to try this stuff you are using on the discs once you post the name. I did find for the cork belts that I could use polishing compound instead of the grease. I'm not a neat guy in the shop, but that was a time when my wife thought I was doing dirty mechanical work in a coal mine.
I've been slow on getting at home on the disc and I figure there's more for me to learn if I pay attention.I always appreciate your input. Thanks. Frank

Calvin, with your permission I would LOVE to come by for a visit. I'm just a newbie here and am enjoying learning about this stuff. Rex has shown me a lot on forging in the couple of visits I've made to him. Would one day next week be ok for a visit? At your convenience - I'm now full time retired<:) Just drop me a email or PM and I will arrange my visit around your schedule.

frank,
i use very fine discs(800 & 1000 grit) wet, I have a slow motor(1100 rpm) and run at 50%. I am doing a final finish, so very light pressure and not much time is needed.

I typically use my disc at 400 and up and also run slow in the 20 to 30% range on a 1750 RPM motor.

I give fresh paper a shot of Windex but grits above 600 will still only give me a good cut for one side of a large blade.

I find it a waste of time to attempt getting further life from the paper. I'll say put on a sheet of 600 and work one side of a chef blade then repaper for the other side. $1 worth of paper isn't much on a big ole blade like a chefs knife.

I've got a cork backing on my disc and use Feathering disk adhesive to hold the paper on. The FDA will release the paper no problem but I do need to re-glue it every 3 or 4 sheets.

Interested what adhesive you guys use to hold your paper on ?

Here are photos of the grease and how I apply it.
This stuff is Formax,No. F26,stick,abrasive belt. An all purpose lubricant for use on coated abrasive belts.
Formax Mfg. Corp. Detroit Mich.
I bought this from Sheffield Knifemakers Supply several years ago,a little goes a long way.
I tried it on belts but water is easier,I grind all my blades after heat treat so heat is a factor.
I don't use water on my 9" disk that I flat grind blades on because I faced it with canvas micarta,it will soak up water and the glue won't stick. This stuff works real well at keeping my blades cool even down to .010" and thinner.

I purchased a tube of that about 10 years ago and used it some on A/O belts. Then the ceramics became available and I stopped using it. I will have to give it a try on the disc machine.

Thanks Calvin that what I was using years ago. It must be a good product to still be in demand.
Hey, Jim, I did some disc sanding this morning. With the brand I use which is Rhyno Red Line it just doesn't give good results at slower speeds even for a courser size like 120 instead of 400. I heard you had some exotic imported brand you were using or did you get through all of that? Frank
