Crosses

In late spring of 2012 we were starting smaller satellite church and there was a fairly large remodel going on. I wasn't able to help out with that because my back was acting up but felt I needed to do something so I made the two crosses in the first photo. Both were made out of old leaf springs. After that I still had the bug for making more crosses and made the group in the second photo. Most of those were made out of old wagon wheels. Some to sell and some to just give away. The last cross has a bit of Jewish influence. I'd made that for a friend as a gift. Guess I have always liked making crosses over the years. They really say something to me.

Cool stuff! I have been playing with the idea of forging a set of roman nails. A good friend of mine saw a preacher speak on the price of grace and during the whole sermon he was playing with a roman nail, it made a huge impact on all.

Brad, For many years I was involved with music and several dramas that were done at church. I was always the go to guy for building sets or what ever was needed. One year were were doing an Easter musical with a fair amount of drama mixed in. I was asked to build a cross that could be laid down besides being locked in at vertical position. First year we used it things went well. No complaints from the fellow that played Jesus. A few years later they used the cross I had made in another production. I'd got an emergency call from the director saying the fellow that was playing Jesus was complaining about the cross hurting his back. He was wanting me to remodel it. I wasn't home at the time and another guy made a more comfortable cross. I had a good chuckle about the cross because it was never intended to be comfortable.

I had a good chuckle about the cross because it was never intended to be comfortable.

No kidding I can't think of a worse way to die. As was mentioned at communion today "Love held Jesus to the cross, not nails"

Thanks for the link I'm probably going to use mild steel for mine. My pastor likes to use stuff like that to drive home the pain and suffering for our benefit.

I made the crown of thorns out of hawthorn bush years ago (for church) and made a mess of my hands doing it. I thought at the time it was not fun to make it must have been terrible to wear.

Brad, I often wondered what was used for the crown of thorns. Hawthorn sure could get a vote. I have several of those around my place but we also have loads of blackberries which could have well been used to. I think by the time Jesus was nailed to the cross he was pretty well spent. I for one am sure glade for what he did!

Here's a couple more photo's of crosses. The large one is out of wrought iron wagon wheel. The toughest part of doing that cross was making the wheels flat. I'd made it for one of the elders who in turn gave it to the head pastor. The forge finished dagger is something I have been wanting to try for some time now. The magic of tap and die.

I'm really not much when it comes to celebrating holidays but since my daughter and our two grand daughters where here from Japan to spend Christmas I decided to put up some lights. We are a ways out and when it gets dark out here there are just a handful of lights to be seen. I ended up making a small cross out of some old fence boards and then bordered it with lights that could be seen from our living room window. I took the lights in that were along the barbed wire fence but left the cross up. One of our neighbors stopped by for a visit this morning.
