Who like's Mahogany??

Haven't posted much in a while. I've been busy with schoolwork and a part time job, and now with swimming starting, there goes the rest of my time! Anyways, I just picked up some mahogany with some great grain that I figured you guys would appreciate. I might cut some of it up into blocks and list them here on KnifeDogs sometime...

Just thought I'd stop by! Now to swim practice! :(

James, I thought you liked mahogany. I can't wait to see how this stuff looks on a knife, if it even has enough color to look nice.

Pretty cool ribbon grain. Watch out for the guitar builders. They love pieces like that.

Mark, part of the reason why I have the whole board (cut in half to fit in my car) is to maybe use it for a guitar top and bottom, and maybe find some other decent stuff for the sides. Also because they gave me a price that I couldn't turn down!

I love the looks of the dark red dyed mahogany at Grandpa's house. It was/is about the finest wood for high class furniture, I cant see why it wouldnt be beautiful on a knife if you can get that deep gloss to show it off.

Bruce, I bet the way you hand-rub your walnut handles, using many coats and the sanding slurry to help fill in the grain, would work great on mahogany as well. Since they seem to have similar density and grain.

Mike you need to finish up a sample of that and see how it looks. Or just send me a pair of scales and I'll do it for you :)

I planed the boards, then I just decided to cut the very end off, sand a corner round, sand to about 300 grit finish, then put two coats of super glue, sanding 800 grit between, buff with white compound for about a minute, and this is what I got. All I spent was about 10 minutes of work from the cut to the gloss.

This wood looks so much nicer than curly maple does. This has multiple colors in it, instead of dark and light tan.

BTW James, this stuff has fairly dense grain, so there aren't the same tiny voids like walnut has. It really seemed pretty dang good at 300 grit.

Mike, I like curly maple. And I like what you've done with the mahogany. It has a distinct look too that I like.

I will take that piece right there and put it on a special edition Frost Bowie. Stag is on it now but I would switch them out. I like the vertical cross grain look. That is sweet!! I do file and handle work for Chuck Stapel and a Buck and Frost Distributor Let me know....????? I love wood and trying all kinds with knives. That would make a nice gun handle too???

I like the cross cut look the best too. What are others opinions about the cut?

I'm sure it would make a wonderful looking gun handle, but it's only 1" wide, and I don't know much about guns, so I do not know if that would work.

(Sent you a PM, Kris)

Very cool, it sure looks nice. That's going to make some nice handles!

I couldn't stop myself... I went back and picked up two more boards. Now I'll have to get them cut up for handles. Too bad I'm visiting family until Friday... I really want to see what these blocks look like! They should be on the forums for sale hopefully by this weekend. Anyone need a Christmas gift for a maker? ;)

He is a block that I took out of the soup this week. I was done with some red pigment. Ron brought over a couple pounds of it.
