    New folder

Thanks for the replies! Yeah, the meteorite is nerve racking and hard to work with....not quite as bad as mammoth tooth though. This knife is definitely full of contrast. I kind of like doing some abstract pieces like this vs. something with more plain complimentary materials and colors. That's...

    New folder

I don't post very often on Knife Dogs, usually just to share whatever I'm working on with my fellow knife enthusiasts. So once again I'm posting to share the latest folder I finished this weekend. This one took a lot of time and work over the course of several months. I'm pretty pleased with the...

    Latest folder

Thanks guys! Martin - The mammoth ivory is quite nice to work with besides the nasty smell. If you ever decide to try it, be sure to use a good respirator as it's about as bad on your lungs as you can get. Working it reminds me of a good hard wood like desert ironwood or amboyna. Mammoth tooth...

    Latest folder

Thought I'd share a few photos of my mammoth and meteorite folder completed about a month ago. This was a very fun and challenging build! I've had a few nice offers from people that would like to buy it but so far I haven't been able to bring myself to sell it. :1:

All done with knife number two!!!!!!!

You were able to do that on your second knife?! Awesome! Especially nice job taking that blade to a mirror polish. Keep up the good work!

    WIP - Mammoth and Meteorite

Thanks! The meteorite wasn't too bad until it came time to re-etch. I got two very nice stable pieces sent to me. They drilled, ground and sanded just like steel. Then of course a person has to take them through the different grits to get a mirror polish. This one was taken to 800 then to the...

    WIP - Mammoth and Meteorite

Hi guys, Just thought I'd share my latest work in progress; a mammoth and meteorite folder. It was a productive weekend in the shop. I was able to devote enough time to get the handle materials drilled, countersunk, shaped, re-etched and finished. I have a feeling this is going to turn out...

    Meteorite?

I'm going to be starting a new folder this weekend and decided to have a couple of pieces of high nickel content meteorite roughly cut to size for bolsters. For those of you who have worked with the stuff, are there any special considerations that I should be aware of when cutting, shaping...

    Damascus bolster follow up...

... a couple of you may remember me asking about using, shaping, attaching and re-etching some Doug Ponzio mosaic damascus for a folder I was working on. I thought I'd give you a little follow up today as I completed the knife last night. I have to say the photos from my Android phone do not...

    Tips on making bolsters?

Looked at your site Doug, very nice engraving! Maybe we can do some business one of these days!

    Tips on making bolsters?

Thanks for your reply too Doug! I actually haven't done any etching thus far. My blade maker usually does a fantastic job when I order blades so I have 0 experience. From reading a tutorial from a guy named Dave on another forum, you basically take 50% Ferric Chloride (etching solution from...

    Tips on making bolsters?

Thanks for your reply Doug! I am assembling a folder very similar to the one shown in my first picture. I haven't figured out what handle material (be it wood, carbon fiber, mammoth, etc.) will be. It will have to be something that goes well with the damascus patterns on both the blade and the...

    Tips on making bolsters?

I'm still pretty new at knifemaking and have to rely on other people for blades, liners, hardware, mosaic pins, etc. With my shop equipment, I am basically a glorified handle maker / fileworker / finisher. I'm ok with that and maybe one day I will invest in and explore my options as far as sole...

    New member, lastest knife creation...

... Hi guys. I've seen this forum in the past and decided to register and get more involved in the online knife community. I make my own handles but have not gotten into the blades. I do the designs and have someone make them for me and then I finish them with filework and handles. One of these...
