Wheeler W2 Fighter in Desert Ironwood

Josh, I have a project I'm working on. It's a forged 5" hunter in Don's W2. I have the blade finished and heat treated with initial polish. I did a differential heat treat for a hamon, and it turned out ok. As soon as my Bump carbide file guide comes in, I'll square the shoulders, fit the...

Wheeler W2 Fighter in Desert Ironwood

A few videos. Sorry, my cutting technique sucks and I need to drop about 40 pounds :D. Make that 20, since the camera adds 20 all by itself. And yes, I know that cutting paper is trite. This is 20 weight printer paper. And I let the paper go prior to cutting it. It takes good geometry and...

Wheeler W2 Fighter in Desert Ironwood

Pictures really don't do the desert ironwood justice. Beautiful, dense burl. Sexy little @.. I'm not the photographer that Nick is, so it's hard to do this knife justice. The sheath work is really really good. Great finish, and very nice details. It fits nice and snug. Being...

    Carbide file guide

Haha! That is awesome! Please express my congratulations to the two of them. I remember very well how that goes from my own wedding so no worries at all. Thanks for seeing if you can get one to me. If not, again, no worries. I hope the two of them have an amazing time, and I'll pray for...

    Carbide file guide

Hey, Bruce. Any idea how long they are delayed on production? I ordered about 3 weeks ago. It's no rush at all, and I'm not worried about it in the least, knowing that good things come to those who wait :D. However, I do have a project on hold, and I need to determine if I should wait for...

EDC in CPM154 and Amboyna Burl

Haha...sorry, Dozier. This one goes to the customer tomorrow and then off to its new home at Christmas (ordered as a gift). The only thing different is now the reverse side has the recipient's initials etched in it (got the stencil in today). Thanks for all the great comments. One of these...

EDC in CPM154 and Amboyna Burl

It's been a while since I've posted a knife here (been a while since I've finished one period :9:). It's 5/32" CPM154 with a working hand finish, handled with stabilized amboyna burl, red liners, and corby's. It has a 3.5" cutting edge, and is 7.75" OAL with a 1.25" tall blade at it's...

Ironwood tips ... My woman has excellent taste

I sand all the way up to 2000 grit. It's such a hard wood, it really benefits from the higher grits vs. other softer woods. It really comes alive after 1000 grit. Make sure you get all the previous scratch marks out prior to moving up to the next grit. After sanding, I use Danish oil with...

Can you use a forge to heat treat?

For heat treating, I'd recommend a baffle in the forge. Take a piece of stainless pipe of a larger diameter than your blade, and place it in the forge for heat treating. After the forge is stable and up to temp (take the temp reading within the baffle), place you blade it and let it come up to...

    Tapered Tang HT

Yeah, it's all but impossible to keep the tang dead soft in stainless with the long soaks times and plenty of time to miss the pearlite nose. I just keep the edge underwater and use a torch to draw back the temper on tang for a while if I really desire a softer tang. --nathan

    Oven Recomendation

Shoot Tracy an email or post on one of his subforums here (Mickley Knives or Midwest Knifemaker Supply). As the Knifedogs forum owner, I'm sure he peruses this board, but he's a busy guy and it will catch his attention quicker if you post in his regular haunts. I'm sure he'd be willing to talk...

    Tapered Tang HT

The plates won't make perfect full contact with the entire tang when tapered, but they still contact at the ricasso and the beginning of the blade taper. Even with the smaller amount of contact, the plates will pull heat out of the entire blade much faster than just an air cool. So no worries...

    Oven Recomendation

It depends on the size of knives you're doing, but you might check out the new Evenheat small oven: It's 8"Wx8"Dx6"T, and diagonally, you can fit almost 11". If I remember correctly, the coils are mounted internally in the walls of the oven. It's small and pretty fast. Otherwise, check out...

    Inert Furnaces

Byron, It is my understanding that there are some commercial heat treaters who use nitrogen injection equiped ovens that can control the cooling rate as fast or slow as desired within the oven, but those are well beyond the means of this miserly knifemaker :). --nathan

    Inert Furnaces

I'm going to defer the salt bath question to those more familiar with them than myself. I studied up on it at one point when I was looking at building some salt tanks, but I decided I really had no need with the size of my hobby knife production. You can keep them in the shop, but just have to...

    Inert Furnaces

I don't know of many individual makers who use inert vaccume furnaces. Most makers use a kiln along the lines of an Evenheat, Sugar Creek, or Paragon oven ($400-$2000 depending on size and controller options). These are not irnert atmosphere kilns. However, I know of some people who have used...
