    Camp knife thickness?

Not sure I understand. For something of this size and desired use I would think you want the weight slightly forward? I also plan on probably using 3/8 micarta for my handles.

    Camp knife thickness?

Yeah that's the type of handle I want to do. I just can seem to get the hang of it. I might elect to keep it a bit simpler this go around and do something like this type of handle instead.

    Camp knife thickness?

That's was something I thought about as well but a machetes grind and length is different so I still had some doubts. Coincidentally I carry a small saw and hatchet in my pack. Lol I do agree that some knives on the market appear to be over built. Although, personally I'm still trying to...

    Camp knife thickness?

For that type of use would you keep the grind at 3/4 or would a ffg be strong enough?

    Camp knife thickness?

My intention would be to use it for something closer to this.

    Camp knife thickness?

So when looking at the projects on my bench the other day I saw I have an untouched bar of 1095 that's 1 1/2 x 1/8 sitting in the corner. I thought it would be fun to make a camp knife out of it. Currently I have only worked on smaller hunter/utility knives. I would ideally like to make this one...

    Number 3

Sadly under those scales it looks like Swiss cheese and i have 2 more blanks that look just like that one so I'm chalking it up to a learning experience and making some new ones.

Had a chance to profiled em. I also made one 10% bigger (according to my copier) because when I held my cardboard cutout it felt small. I think they should turn out nice though.

    Number 3

So I had some down time and took another look at this design. I ended up with 2 possibilities that might improve upon what I had tried to do. First would be a Nessmuk skinner and second would just be a scaled down version of the previous design. Instead of being almost a 1.5" wide knife it would...

Yea I thought having the liner peek out from the scales might be a unique look. Haven't seen it done before really. As far as turds go. I may need a bigger box. lol

    Number 3

So I'm almost done with my third. I have just a little more sanding on the handle to go and I feel like its not living up to how I envisioned it. I don't know if I'm reaching beyond my skill level or if the design just isn't practical. The knife itself is comfortable and functional but looks...

Do you have a link to the antique ivory scales you showed in the beginning?

    2nd Knife Finished / Critique

Re-did the handle. I think it looks better now. I don't think I'm ready to try that just yet lol... Maybe after these few are finished

    2nd Knife Finished / Critique

The handle was intended to be a three finger grip. I for some reason like making smaller knives. Although I do have several coming up that are in the 7" + OAL range. The handle is also egg shaped and not rough as it appears to be in the photo. I took it up to 400 grit by hand but it does look...

    Something doesn't look right...

Thanks for your time and thoughts guys. I believe the uneven grind was just an error on my part but I will definitely double check the straightness of the steel. Also it has not yet been heat treated. I only roughed the shape and bevel out before I set it aside. I think I will finish this one as...

    Something doesn't look right...

I ground out this knife last week because I liked the style handle I had seen on other peoples work. Something about the one I made just doesn't look right to me. Anyone have some advice on what might be wrong or is it just my eyes.

    Bar Stock Bent?

Well I'm not equipped to do my own heat treat so I'll try hand straightening it before i send it out

    Bar Stock Bent?

I have a piece of 3/32 1095 that is warped. What would be the best way to deal with this? Is it for each knife or try to straighten the bar? I also have a piece of 1/8 1084 with a slight bend in it too. Pic of the 1095: Happy Holiday John
